Red Wolves Women’s Golf Tied for Third at Jim West Challenge

BLANCO, Texas (2/17/13) – Competing in its first spring tournament, the Arkansas State women’s golf team shot a combined 640 Sunday at the Vaaler Creek Golf Club to complete the Jim West Challenge’s first two rounds tied for third place among 12 teams.

The Red Wolves ended the first round tied for fifth place with a 326, but cut 12 strokes off that total in the second to climb two places in the standings and finish the day tied with Louisiana-Monroe and Eastern Michigan. The Red Wolves are just two strokes behind second-place Illinois State, while host-school Texas State leads the field with a 621.

ASU was led by freshman Abi Laker, who posted a combined 154 to put her in a tie for fourth place. Laker carded a first-round 80 before coming back to shoot a team-best 74 for the next 18 holes and will enter the tournament’s final round six strokes behind leader Rachel Powers of Illinois State.

The Red Wolves had two other players finish the first 36 holes among the top-25 individual leaders as Marie Couffignal, competing in her first career tournament at A-State, and Anna Carling are in 17th place and tied for 25th, respectively. Couffignal posted a best round of 76 and ended the day with a combined 157, while Carling recorded a 162.

Also competing for Arkansas State, Jennifer Loiacano is tied for 42nd place with a 167 and Clara Tefteller is in 64th with a 188.

The third and final round of the Jim West Challenge will be played Monday.
