Red Wolves win Clay Target Championships

SAN ANTONIO – The Arkansas State University trap and skeet team has taken top honors in the American trap category in the 2014 Association of College Unions Internationals Clay Target Championships held last week in San Antonio. The Red Wolves also captured second place in the international trap category. Just over 630 students took part in the championships held last week in San Antonio.

The Collegiate Clay Target Championships are the only national tournament in which collegiate shooters may compete in six different clay target events within the same program. The events include international skeet, international trap, American skeet, American trap, a walking course of sporting clays and five-stand. The aggregate scores of the six events are used to determine men’s, women’s and team national champions.

Members of the ASU team included: Haden Zirbel of Wiener, Jordan Harper and James Wray of Harrisburg, Forrest Jones of West Memphis and Fletcher Dowell of Monticello.

It is the only competition that includes ammunition for competition as part of the registration fee for student participants. This year the ammunition was supplied by Winchester and Federal. The event is possible with the support of 55 sponsors, shooting organizations and media partners.

The 75 schools represented at the shoot came from 33 states. The most popular event for the students is American trap, in which 96 percent of students participated on Sunday, March 30.

Other Arkansas schools participating included Ecclesia College in Springdale and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
