Here is some of the latest news from the US Men’s National Team before the match:

U.S. MNT CLOSES WORLD CUP GROUP PLAY AGAINST GERMANY: After a dramatic 2-1 victory against Ghana and a roller coaster 2-2 draw with Portugal to open the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. Men’s National Team will finish Group G play against Germany on Thursday, June 26, at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, WatchESPN, Univision and ESPN Radio. Fans can also follow live on Twitter @ussoccer. The U.S. sits in second place in the group with four points and a plus-1 goal differential trailing Germany, which also has four points, only on goal differential; Germany has a plus-4 goal differential. Germany hammered Portugal 4-0 in its World Cup opener before tying Ghana 2-2 in its second Group G match.

The USA’s draw with Portugal has the team in solid position to advance to the Round of 16, as any result against Germany would guarantee passage to the knock-out stage. The U.S. could still go through with a loss to Germany as long as Ghana and Portugal either tie or neither catches the USA on goal differential should they win. The U.S. gave up an early goal to Portugal’s Nani inside the opening five minutes but battled back to take command of the match through Jermaine Jones’ first World Cup goal of his career and Clint Dempsey’s fourth career World Cup strike. A win would have booked the USA’s ticket to the next round, but in the final seconds, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo swung in an immaculate cross that Varela headed into the back of the U.S. net, denying the U.S. the points needed to secure early passage to the Round of 16.

Jozy Altidore, who left the USA’s opening game against Ghana with a hamstring injury, has been ruled out for the Germany match. Dempsey (nose) and defender Matt Besler (hamstring), have recovered and from their respective injuries and will be available for head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who has no other injury concerns with the squad.
