Forrest City vs Helena-West Helena

Andrew Bagley Author ArchiveFORREST CITY – Behind 18 points from Dwain Whitfield, Forrest City pulled away from the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (1-2) in the second quarter to cruise to a 66-49 victory.

The Mustangs didn’t take their first lead until halfway through the first quarter when they went up by a score of 10-8. The Mustangs never trailed again and increased their lead to 21-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Forrest City broke the game open in the second quarter with a very stingy defense that did not allow a field goal from the Cougars until there were only 3:05 left in the first half. The Mustangs rode numerous second chance points to a twenty-point lead of 39-19 at the half.

The Cougars could never get it closer than 15 points in the second half and trailed by as many as 21 points in the third quarter.

In addition to Whitfield’s 18 points, Trevonte Collier added 15 points for the Mustangs. James Silours and Trey Hutchinson added 9 points each. Helena-West Helena was led by Ricky Beckwood who had 13 points.

In girls’ action, Forrest City came from behind to escape with a narrow 62-59 win over the Lady Cougars (1-2). The game was close throughout with a 10-10 tie at the end of the first quarter and Forrest City taking a precarious 28-25 lead in at the break.

In the third quarter, the Lady Cougars went on a 15-2 run to take a 49-42 lead. However, the Lady Mustangs steadily drew closer and used full court pressure to force turnovers. The Lady Mustangs tied the game at 57-57 with 1:56 to go and regained the lead 60-59 with 35 seconds left on the way to the win.

Mary Burks of Forrest City led the Lady Mustangs with 19 points. Delana Bedford led the Lady Cougars with 18.
