G.R.I.T.S. Roller Derby Hosts First Home Bout of Season April 13

Girls Rollin’ In the South (GRITS), a women’s flat-track roller derby league based in Cabot, Ark., will host its first home bout of the 2013 season on April 13 at the UALR Fieldhouse (located within the Donaghey Student Center on the UALR campus). GRITS Roller Derby was founded in March 2010, and is entering its third season of competition against teams from Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Lousiana, and Mississippi.

GRITS’ travel team, the Breakneck Brawlers, has a 1-2 record so far this season, having lost a tough bout cross-town rivals Central Arkansas Roller Derby on Feb. 16 in Little Rock by a score of 194-117, and a heartbreaker to the Mountain Gateway Sisterhood of Steel in Poteau, Okla., on March 3.  That bout was tied at 143 a piece, the Brawlers started the last jam of the bout with their jammer in the penalty box, SOS picked up three points on a power jam and won 146-143.

Fortunes turned for the Brawlers last weekend in Jacksonville, Texas, when they took on the East Texas Bombers. Overcoming a first-half deficit of 26 points to ultimately win 183-133, the Brawlers relied on improved defense from their blocking corps, and opportunistic jamming from Slameron Diaz, Brick Wall-us, Sassie Longlegz, and jessi  couture. Unsurprisingly, the East Texas team awarded MVP to Brawlers blocker Ragin’ Roxie at the end of the game.

GRITS hosts the Mo-Kan Roller Girlz of Joplin, Missouri on April 13. Mo-Kan has proven to be a tough opponent the last two seasons, but the Brawlers are looking to improve upon previous results.  Tickets for the event are $10 at the door, or $8 in advance.  If you have a military or student ID, there is an additional $2 discount per ticket.  Go to www.facebook.com/gritsrollerderby and send them a message to inquire about advance tickets.  More information about Girls Rollin’ In The South, including practice location and times, can be found at www.gritsrollerderby.com.
