Helena-West Helena Hangs on to Beat Sylvan Hills

SHERWOOD- Helena-West Helena Central (4-4, 1-2) held on late in a tight battle against Sylvan Hills for a 64-60 victory on the road against Bears.

The game was tight throughout with Sylvan Hills leading 19-16 at the end of the first quarter and 29-28 at the intermission.  In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, the second half was no different.  The Cougars took the lead late in the third quarter by a score of 47-44.

In the fourth quarter, Sylvan Hills’ Delsin Parker hit a three to cut the score to 51-50.  On the next possession, Lewis answered with a three of his own to make the score 54-50.  But that was as close as the Bears would get.

Anthony Lewis led the Cougars with 21 points.  Frederick Bedford added 19 points for the Cougars, including all 10 second chance points scored by Helena-West Helena.  The Cougars also made 13-21 free throws compared to just 3-5 for the Bears.  Sylvan Hills was led by Ronnie Hinton with 20 points.

Cougar Coach Willie Jackson said, “Our guys fought hard tonight.  This was an important win for us.  We have to continue to practice hard and get better.”

In girls’ action, the Lady Bears ended the game on a 14-0 run on the way to a 67-45 win over the Lady Cougars (3-5, 1-2).
