Houston Nutt Tells a Story on Matt Jones?

We’ve heard an awful lot from Houston Nutt over the years living here in Arkansas.

There’s “That was a called play, and I called it, Chuck (brotha)!”

and…

“I hope Bequette is still hurt…”

and…

Earlier this month, Houston Nutt made the papers in Mississippi:

Remember when Houston Nutt stood up at the press conference to announce his firing and repeatedly said, “You’re not that far off.”? At the time, Ole Miss was 2-7 (and would get blown out in its remaining three games), had no starting quarterback or plan to get one and had up to 35 players at risk of academic ineligibility.

It was nothing short of comical, Nutt’s remarks that day.

From and interview with AL.com, Nutt said:

I think the biggest thing he did was he got Bo Wallace,” former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said of Freeze. “Jevan Snead left early for us (after the 2009 seaon) and it kind of threw us out of whack a little at quarterback. We feel like at every other position, we were on our way. So it didn’t surprise me.”

“… if you look now at the freshmen, the redshirt freshmen and sophomores now that are going to be juniors … we recruited some really good kids — very fast, athletic kids. Hugh came in and did a good job of taking some good players that were left him.”

“One thing his mother and father said is: ‘If you get Denzel, his little brother is coming to play with big brother because we’re not going to two separate Saturdays,’” Nutt said of Nkemdiche. “So we knew we had a leg up with a No. 1 recruit. That helped Hugh. And then Hugh did a really good job with about three or four other really highly recruited players. You get a player like Nkemdiche and they become your No. 1 recruiter. Good players want to play with good players.”

“Some of the things we asked for four or five years ago, now they’re building – new team meeting room, new weight room, going to feed your kids with the right nutrition,” he said. “I just think there’s a lot of good things – just keep winning.”

Then last night Twitter blew up with the Houston Nutt-isms that may be the doozy-est of them all:

There’s an awfully lot about this story Houston Nutt tells on former Razorback quarterback Matt Jones that strikes us as odd. Not the part about the behavior of the star quarterback and his supposed split personality “Rodney,” although that would have been very odd.

What was so strange to us was this story sounded to our trained Houston Nutt-detector ears as typical Houston Nutt BS.

Well, during his radio show on 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock on Wednesday afternoon, Jones addressed the story, saying “that didn’t really happen,” and “I wouldn’t have been cool enough to pull something like that off.”

His co-host, Trey Schaap, asked Jones if Nutt had embellished the story just a bit, to which Jones replied, “Yeah, I am saying that didn’t really happen.”

Jones went on to say later in the show he thinks Nutt got going with the story and took it to the point where it shouldn’t have gone. He said again, “That didn’t happen.”

Perhaps Nutt and Jones can discuss this story in more detail on air Sept. 23, when the former head ball coach is in town for the Little Rock Touchdown Club as the featured speaker. That would make some great radio.

If you have a Houston Nutt story or great Houston Nutt one-liner we need to add, please share it with us in the comments.
