NEW ALBANY, Miss. – The Lyon College softball team stayed within striking distance of Blue Mountain College throughout the teams’ doubleheader on Monday. But the Scots couldn’t score the runs when needed as they stranded 18 in the two games as the Lady Toppers escaped with the sweep, 1-0 and 5-1, at the New Albany Sportsplex.

The double setback leaves Lyon with a 1-11 season mark and an eight-game losing skid heading into Wednesday’s back-to-back games in Mobile, Ala. against Emmanuel College (Ga.) and University of Mobile. The opener will get underway at 2 p.m., with the first pitch of the second game starting at 4 p.m.

The Scots left 10 runners on board the basepaths in the opener, while Blue Mountain (6-5-1) was able to push an unearned run across the plate in the bottom of the second and then hold off the Scots for a 1-0 win.

Jessica Cagigas (1-5) went the distance in the circle for the Scots, but was forced to take the loss. She didn’t give up an earned run, while striking out four and walking none as she threw only 69 pitches.

Brooke Denton (3-2) was the winning hurler for Blue Mountain. She also went the distance, throwing the shutout. In seven innings she gave up just two hits, while fanning five and walking only three.

Lyon College lead off hitter Apple Filat recorded one of the two hits for the Scots, as she finished 1-for-4. Second baseman Amanda McCauley accounted for the other hit in a 1-for-3 effort. Savannah Graham, Lauren Mills and Cagigas each picked up a walk.

The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but couldn’t sustain it past the fourth as the Lady Toppers scored four times in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth for a 5-1 victory in Game 2.

Graham and Stephanie Haft each picked up a pair of hits in the six-hit attack for Lyon. Graham went 2-for-4, while Haft was a perfect 2-for-2, with a run scored and a walk drawn. However, Lyon had trouble pushing runners in from the basepaths, stranding eight.

Filat had a 1-for-4 game and shortstop Valerie Howell went 1-for-3, with a run driven in, for Lyon College.

Blue Mountain first baseman Whitney Hardwick was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish to pace the Lady Toppers. She picked up the pace after going hitless in the first game.

Hailey Beckham (2-4) scattered six hits to grab the win for Blue Mountain. She struck out three batters and walked only one.

Lyon grabbed the lead for the first time in the afternoon in the third when Haft singled to left and Filat followed that with a single to second base. Graham picked up a single in the infield to load the bases, before Howell’s single to centerfield pushed in Haft to break the scoreless tie.

But the Lady Toppers weren’t finished, driving in four runs with three hits in the fourth and adding a run on a hit in the sixth to pick up the victory.
