Mabary Lifts Henderson State Softball to a 6-5 Win Over OBU

Laura Mabary laced a single to left-center field in the bottom of the 7th-inning to lift Henderson State to a 6-5 win over Ouachita Baptist, Sunday at Dee White Field.

Henderson State, 9-11 on the season and 3-1 in the Great American Conference, lost the first game 8-0, but claimed the series with the win in the finale. The Lady Reddies won a double-header from the Lady Tigers on Saturday.

In the final game of the weekend, OBU led 1-0 before Henderson took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first-innings.

Sarah Gipson began the inning reaching on an error and advanced to third when Mabary doubled. Amber Wilburn also doubled later in the inning to score both Gipson and Mabary to give Henderson the lead.

Ouachita Baptist, 7-13 overall and 1-3 in the GAC, tied the score in the 2nd-inning with the help of a Parish Reed single.

Henderson State regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Gipson hit a two-out single, scoring Amy Halter who singled earlier in the inning.

The Lady Reddies increase their lead to 5-2 in the third-inning when Hali Kizer hit a two-run home run to left-center field.

OBU fought back scoring a run in the sixth then tying the game in the seventh on a Kailey Madden two-run double down the leftfield line.

In the Henderson seventh, Katie Hulan walked to lead off the inning with Shelbie Palmore re-entering the game to run for Hulan. Gipson grounded out to short advancing Palmore to second. Palmore then moved to third on a wild pitch to set the stage for Mabary’s game-winner.

Wilburn went 6-for-10 in the series with 2 RBI’s, while Gibson and Halter had five hits each.

Henderson State will next travel to Russellville to take on Arkansas Tech in a four-game GAC series Friday, March 1, with the first-pitch set for 2 p.m.
