Overheard: It’s Gonna Be an Ugly Year for Hogs

“Every team in the SEC West is better on offense except the Hogs…

We might beat Ole Miss,” the armchair quarterback added.

The sports desk here at Sporting Life Arkansas is busy every week gathering thoughts and tidbits from folks on the street, in the sports bars around the state and in our email in-box. We thought it would be interesting to get analysis and viewpoints from the “fan in the stand” on a number of topics.

Join us as we take this journey to honesty and anger; fear and loathing; sobriety and insanity.

The buddy of the fellow who made the comment above while watching Texas A&M play UCLA replied, “It’s gonna be an ugly year for the Hogs.

Hey, ESPN! Why have three guys trying to yell over a marching band at halftime? Mack Brown has gotta retire.

Did you catch Quinn Grovey as the color man on the radio the other night? He was a shitty sideline “reporter.” What made anyone think he would be a good color announcer in the booth?

An agreeing pal said, “He was awful.”

“They (the Arkansas Razorbacks)  need to go back completely to smash mouth/play-action and stop this dropback shit they can’t protect for.

The defense played fast and according to the coaches and players they communicate a LOT better. Not needing to think as much (that’s as much experience as it is new coaches’ style and teaching) correlates to playing faster. I liked that.

My point spread was 39. I thought anything less would have been a concern.

Offense underwhelmed early, obviously, but defense was better than I expected. Austin (Allen), I’m not so sure about anymore. Still forces in throws, holds it too long, won’t send it into stands when it’s not there, doesn’t read defense and where pressure is coming from well, and simply didn’t even look deep for receivers uncovered a few other times.

He had a tight end open right off the snap of the ball, uncovered, to the corner end zone and somehow doesn’t see that?

He throws to a covered wide receiver in flat instead? It was almost like they told him, “You could throw bombs all day, but let’s work on our short to medium passing game and get Nance, Edwards and Pettway involved.”

“I give the Razorbacks get a B or B- after the first game. The offense was fine when it settled down, but there are a lot of new parts. Defense (first team) was an A. Kicking was fine. The Hogs still suck at kick returns (blocking). Coverage was OK.”

***

“Hey, at least they can kick the ball out of the end zone.”

“Yeah, with a strong wind at their backs.”

***

“The Red Wolves were robbed! That is a catch and a touchdown. Why is this even being reviewed?!”

***

“A-State is giving Nebraska all they can handle. What a game plan.”

***

“If the game next week in Jonesboro against Miami isn’t a sellout, there will never be a sellout in Jonesboro.”

***

They claim the Salt Bowl (a rivalry high school football game between Benton and Bryant) drew 32,000 people. Thursday night the Hogs drew 36,066. Both games were played at War Memorial Stadium.

This could be a Kiffin moment; Sumlin could be fired on the bus.

Sumlin is gonna need a new stick of gum.

“Wally Hall is awful in print, stupid on radio, and the only reason to watch his now defunct TV show was for the laughs at his goofy reactions to the prank phone calls. That shit’s been tolerated by this state full of numbskulls and/or that baldheaded Martian-looking newspaper owner for 37 f*****g years. And people wonder why newspapers are failing.”
