Razorback Football Recruiting Near Bottom in SEC, But in National Top 40

As National Signing Day approaches (Feb.5, 2014),  jittery fans and amped up recruiting experts react to every tweet and other public utterance and outfit choice of teenage boys trying to glean who’s going where and why.

Razorback football recruiting, seemed to take a hit earlier today.

And while the change of heart by Pierce may have some effect on final Razorback football recruiting rankings, ESPN released its most up-to-date Top 40 list of 2014 signing classes showing the Hogs sitting at 32 nationally, up two spots. At No. 32, the Razorbacks’ class would be 11th in the SEC, one spot above Missouri and four spots above Mississippi St. The only SEC football team not in ESPN’s Top 40 is Vanderbilt.

For what it’s worth, Rivals had the Razorback football recruiting class of 2014 at 26th in October, with the positive word from Pierce. Rivals now lists Arkansas as No. 29.

This was the short, sweet message from Ravian in October and our post on him from then.

The word is Ravian Pierce, a highly-recruited tight end from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.’s Plantation High School, has committed to play football for the Arkansas Razorbacks. What a way for the Arkansas Razorbacks to march into Florida later this week.

Pierce is a 6-4, 240-pound four-star who had offers from about 20 schools, including Alabama, Ole Miss and Florida, took an official visit to Arkansas last weekend. Reports are he narrowed his schools to Arkansas, Alabama and Florida before making the call to head football coach Bret Bielema to announce his commitment this week.

With Pierce’s selection of the Razorbacks, he becomes the 17th commitment in the 2014 recruiting class and fifth player from talent-rich Florida to choose the Hogs since the arrival of Bielema to Arkansas.

The announcement of the verbal commitment from Pierce now has the Razorbacks in the 26th spot nationally, according to Rivals.

Below are video highlights of Ravian Pierce and and interview with him from earlier this year.

He has not passed the ACT yet and will not know if he has passed until after Signing Day. Because Arkansas is only allotted 25 scholarships a year and he has not yet qualified to enroll in school, Arkansas is not going to take that gamble. So, his “decommitment” may be a little misleading.

Hey, where in NYC are you? I’m in Brooklyn.

With Hunter Henry in his way for at least the next 2 yrs why would he want to come here anyway?

  • Harry Taint

I think this was a mutual decision.

This is not a coment about recruiting or Mr. Pierce. It is about Randy Shannon. If the reports are true that Shannon could not be a Defensive Coordinator before February 1 or he would forfeit some money, then I wonder if he was hired with the understanding that he would coach linebackers his first year, then become coordinator the next. It all makes sense now that Chris Ash left. It seems that Ash never really put down roots here, doesn’t it? Could it be that Coach B asked his friend from Wisconsin to join him for a year. After that Shannon would become the Defensive Coordinator and Coach B would give Ash a good recommendation at another big school. I never understood why Shannon would accept a job to coach linebackers when he has the qualifications to do much more. I also didn’t understand why Ash would make a lateral move to Ohio State. If Shannon is announced as our new defensive coordinator, then it will all be clear. Hmmmmmm.

Wow…that’s a reach. I would think Shannon was going to be promoted to Co and Ash did not like it. As far as Ohio State being a “lateral” move…not really. They are a true top ten team every year. We are not.

      • NewYorkHogFan

Maybe you are right. But why would Shannon be promoted to DC if Ash was already here?

  • BossHog43

The article is misleading…it IS about grades. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

    • Harry Taint

I bet he ends up at FAU with Charlie.
