Razorbacks Travel to Nebraska for Tuesday Double Header

FAYETTEVILLE – The No. 12 Arkansas baseball team faces another road challenge on Tuesday as the Razorbacks travel to Lincoln, Neb., to play a doubleheader against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Game one of the twinbill is set to start at 3:05 p.m., while game two will start no earlier than 6:35 p.m. 

The first game of the doubleheader will be available online for RazorVision subscribers on ArkansasRazorbacks.com, while the second game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Both games of the doubleheader will be available on the Razorback Baseball Radio Network from IMG. Three-time Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year Chuck Barrett will have the call. The Razorbacks, 25-12 on the season, are coming off a hard-fought series against LSU that saw the Tigers take two of three games. Arkansas hit .235 in the series vs. LSU and were led at the plate by Dominic Ficociello, who hit .444 (4-for-9) with four runs scored and a stolen base. Jacob Mahan batted .400 in the three-game series with two RBI and a run scored, while Tyler Spoon hit .308 with two RBI. Brett McAfee went 3-for-7 with a RBI and a run scored.

Arkansas is hitting .272 as a team entering the Nebraska series. Spoon leads the Razorbacks at the plate with a .333 batting average, three homers and 37 RBI. Brian Anderson is batting .308 with two homers and 22 RBI, while Jacob Mahan has a .304 batting average with a home run and 15 RBI. Joe Serrano is swinging the bat at a .301 clip with a homer and 12 RBI.

The Razorback pitching staff leads the country with a team ERA of 1.72. Arkansas will start freshman right hander Trey Killian in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Killian has pitched in 11 games, including four starts, and has a 3-2 record with a 2.67 ERA. Senior southpaw Tyler Wright will start game two of the doubleheader. Wright is 1-1 and has not allowed an earned run in eight appearances, including two starts. 

The Arkansas bullpen has compiled a 9-3 record with nine saves and a 1.16 ERA. Jalen Beeks has pitched in a team-high 17 games and has a 4-0 record with two saves and a 0.98 ERA. Brandon Moore has appeared in 14 games, all in relief, and is 1-2 with a 1.54 ERA. Colby Suggs has seen time in 12 games and has a team-high four saves with a 2.61 ERA. Trent Daniel has pitched in 11 games and is 0-1 with one save and a 1.88 ERA.

Nebraska is 14-19 on the season and tied for third in the Big Ten with an 8-4 record. The Cornhuskers have won six of their last 10 games, but are coming off a series loss to Ohio State last weekend.

As a team, Nebraska is hitting .283 on the season. The Cornhuskers are led at the plate by Chad Christensen, who is batting .400 with two homers and 20 RBI. Pat Kelly is hitting .322 with 16 RBI, while Michael Pritchard is batting .309 with 10 RBI. Austin Darby is tied for the team lead with 21 RBI and is a .305 hitter with two homers. 

On the mound, the Huskers have a team ERA of 5.01. Nebraska will start sophomore left hander Kyle Kubat in Tuesday’s first game. Kubat, who will be making his first appearance of 2013, was a freshman All-American in 2012 and finished the year with a 5-1 record and a 2.63 ERA. In the second game of the doubleheader, junior righty Brandon Pierce will get the start. Pierce has a 1-3 record with a 5.74 ERA in eight appearances, including six starts.

Dylan Vogt leads Nebraska with 15 appearances and has a team-high five saves with a 1-2 record and a 2.76 ERA. Josh Roeder has pitched in 11 games and is 0-2 with one save and a 1.02 ERA. Zach Hirsch has also pitched in 11 games, 10 out of the bullpen, and has a 3-2 record with a 4.78 ERA.

Arkansas and Nebraska have split the 16 previous meetings between the two schools. The two teams have met just twice in Lincoln with each club winning once.
