JONESBORO, Ark. (3/24/13) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis defeated Southern Illinois-Carbondale 4-3 in cold and windy conditions Sunday at Allen Park in Jonesboro.

The win was ASU’s second straight and the Red Wolves now stand at 4-5 overall on the season. The Salukis fell to 10-3 with the loss.

With every other match complete and the score tied 3-3, Biljana Miloshevska’s match against Anita Lee would decide the victory. Miloshevska fought through the cold and wind to take the match against Lee 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 to give the Red Wolves the win.

“Biljana played an outstanding match,” ASU tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said. “She was able to win it for the team in the third set of her match.”

Arkansas State got its other three points during the singles competition. Tamara Slijepcevic defeated Melanie Delsart in straight sets 6-0, 6-3, while senior Ioana Teu won over Ariadna Cairo Baza in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Jess Heeps-Eriksen fought back from a first set loss against Jennifer Dien to win her match by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“This was a great win for us,” Engelbrecht added. “I’m proud of how hard the team fought regardless of how uncomfortable the weather was.”

Southern Illinois got singles points from Natasha Tomishima an Anastacia Simons. Tomishima squared off against A-State’s Janie Nowland and took the win by a count of 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Simons defeated Sofia Krsmanovic in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

The Salukis were able to win the doubles point over A-State when Tomishima/Dien defeated Slijepcevic/Miloshevska 8-3 and Lee/Love took the victory over Heeps-Eriksen/Krsmanvoic 8-2. ASU’s No. 1 doubles pair of Teu/Nowland were victorious over Delsart/Simons 8-1.
