Playing at a rapid pace, Henderson State conducted its first football scrimmage on Thursday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium with several Reddies displaying great speed.
The Reddies started the scrimmage working on special teams, specifically the kickoff return and kickoff coverage teams. Darius Davis worked in as Henderson’s kick returner and was in midseason form outrunning the coverage team on several occasions.
The first team offense then took over working against the second team defense.
Kevin Rodgers completed his first three passes over the middle with Israel Valentin catching two passes and Corey Chappell also having a big catch.
Jaquan Cole capped off the opening drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
The accelerated pace of practice continued as Rodgers, who played in just two series’, connected with Joseph Snapp for a 30-yard touchdown on the second offensive possession. Snapp fought through a pair of defenders to reach pay dirt.
Wide receivers Carlos Arredondo, Mark Czaus and Dustin Holland displayed their talents with several receptions across the middle.
“I thought we did some good things with the first team moving the ball well which is what we expected them to do,” said offensive coordinator Mike Volarvich. “We played with good tempo early, but as the game went on, we began to drag a little bit. We got to get a lot better if we want to do the things that we are expecting to do.”
The first-team defense was impressive as well, as middle linebacker Josh Davis made several big hits, while Chris King picked off a Dallas Hardison pass.
Linebackers Lawson Schulz and Peyton Squires were also in on several defensive stops.
The Reddies will go through a full workout and review film on Friday, and will have a short workout Saturday morning before a second scrimmage Saturday at 7 p.m.
