Tales from the Woods – Arkansas Deer Season Keeps Officers Busy

Arkansas Deer Season Keeps Officers BusyLITTLE ROCK – It was a busy weekend for the Enforcement Division of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Several hunting accidents and arrests were reported during the opening weekend of the modern gun Arkansas deer season.

In Lee County, a Wildlife Officer was involved in a shooting early Saturday morning. Initial information is that a suspect tried to run over a wildlife officer after the suspect shot at a deer decoy. The officer fired into the suspect vehicle at which time the suspect left the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect is still at large. Neither the wildlife officer nor suspect appeared to be injured. A search is underway for the suspect.

In Prairie County, a man was accidentally shot in his lower back on Saturday morning. The victim was reportedly assisting his daughter while getting out of her deer stand when the accident occurred. He was airlifted to Little Rock and was conscious with movement in his extremities at last report.

Around mid-morning Saturday, Cross County wildlife officers received a call of a fatal hunting accident. The Cross County Coroner and paramedics on the scene later determined that the cause of death was natural causes.

There were two reported hunting accidents in Nevada County. In one incident, a man died after falling from his deer stand. The second incident involved an accidental shooting involving a man and a woman.

Earlier last week, two Arkansas individuals were issued citations for killing deer in Mississippi without non-resident hunting licenses. The two individuals initially said they were hunting on Arkansas land that is located on the Mississippi side of the Mississippi River. They later admitted that they knew they were in Mississippi when they killed the deer. The deer were then taken to a taxidermist in Craighead County. Both deer were confiscated and are being held as evidence.
