UAFS Begins Road Trip With UTPB

After a pair of Heartland Conference home games to start the second semester of play, the UAFS men’s and women’s basketball teams will take their first extensive conference road trip of the season this weekend.

UAFS will play the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Falcons on Thursday at the Falcon Dome in Odessa and will play the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies on Saturday at Oscar Williams Fieldhouse in Goodwell.

Tip-off for Thursday’s encounter at UTPB will be 5:30 p.m. for the women’s game and 7:30 p.m. for the men’s game. Live stats for the women’s game and live stats for the men’s game and webcast will be available.

The Lions (8-6, 4-0) will carry a two-game winning streak into their game against the Falcons, having beaten St. Mary’s (99-90) and Texas A&M International (87-82) this past weekend at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS is one of only two remaining unbeaten teams in league play and is tied with No. 19 Newman University (13-1, 4-0) for first place. Both teams own a two-game lead over St. Mary’s (10-3, 3-2).

The Lions are averaging 79 points per game with four players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior forward Djordje Stojanovic (13.7), junior guard Jake Toupal (13.2), junior guard Corey Copeland (12.1) and senior guard Dijon Farr (10.1).

UAFS is out-rebounding its opponents by almost 5 rebounds per game (39.3-34.9). Senior guard Dijon Farr leads the team with 4.6 rebounds per game and is one of five Lions averaging more than 4 rebounds per game.

The Lions are allowing 74 points per game and forcing 17 turnovers per game. Toupal leads the team with 22 steals and is one of five Lions with double-digit steals, and junior forward Bo Franklin leads the team with 10 blocked shots.

UTPB (5-7, 1-3) has won three games in a row and is coming off a conference home win against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday. It was the first game of a three-game conference homestand for the Falcons, who are 4-1 at home this season.

The Falcons are averaging 68 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – junior guard Xavier Martin (12.3) and junior guard/forward Rob Heyer (10.9). UTPB is out-rebounding its opponents by almost 2 rebounds per game (31.3-29.9). Heyer leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per game.

UTPB is allowing 67 points per game and forcing 13 turnovers per game. Heyer leads the team with 13 steals, and junior guard Anthony Dees leads the team with 5 blocked shots.

The Lady Lions (5-10, 1-2) won their first conference game of the season on Saturday with a hard-fought 70-64 victory against Texas A&M International at the Stubblefield Center and have won two of their past three games after losing five consecutive games.

UAFS is averaging 67 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior forward Katie BenAmor (13.7) and junior post Angi Ramey (11.8). The Lady Lions are being out-rebounded by their opponents by almost 1 rebound per game (46.8-46.5). Ramey, who was this week’s conference player of the week, leads the team with 10 rebounds per game and seven double-doubles.

The Lady Lions are allowing 70 points per game and forcing 17 turnovers per game. Freshman guard Brittany Holbert leads the team with 28 steals, and Ramey leads the team with 41 blocked shots.

UTPB (8-5, 2-1) is in third place in the conference behind conference co-leaders St. Mary’s (12-3, 5-0) and St. Edward’s (9-5, 2-0) and has won two games in a row. The Falcons are coming off a 59-48 home win against Oklahoma Panhandle State. It was the first game of a three-game homestand.

The Falcons are averaging 69 points per game with three players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior guard/forward Teisha King (21.3), senior forward Taniqua Ards (14.4) and senior forward Briannah Matthews (10.7). UTPB is out-rebounding its opponents by almost 5 rebounds per game (41.1-36.7). Matthews leads the team with 7 rebounds per game.

UTPB is allowing 65 points per game and forcing 18 turnovers per game. King leads the team with 35 steals, while Matthews leads the team with 14 blocked shots.
