UAFS Lions Continue Homestand Against TAMIU

The UAFS men’s and women’s basketball teams continue their Heartland Conference homestand on Saturday afternoon when they host the Texas A&M International Dustdevils at the Stubblefield Center.

There has been a slight format change for this conference doubleheader. The men’s game will begin at 2 p.m., while the women’s game will begin at 4 p.m. The games will be broadcast on KHGG-FM 103.1 and via the Internet at www.sportshog1031.com. There will be live stats for the women’s game and live stats for the men’s game and a webcast will be available.

The Lions (7-6, 3-0) are coming off an impressive 99-90 win against the St. Mary’s Rattlers on Thursday night that kept them tied atop the conference standings with Newman University (12-1, 3-0).

It was the second-most points scored this season by the Lions, who are averaging 78.7 points per game. Four players are averaging double-figures in scoring – senior forward Djordje Stojanovic (13.1), junior guard Jake Toupal (13.1), junior guard Corey Copeland (12.2) and senior guard Dijon Farr (10.5).

UAFS is out-rebounding its opponents by more than 4 rebounds per game (39.8-35.5). Junior forward Bo Franklin leads the team with 4.7 rebounds per game off the bench. The Lions are allowing 73 points per game and forcing 16.7 turnovers per game.

Toupal leads the team with 22 steals, while Franklin leads the team with 10 blocked shots.

Texas A&M International (7-5, 2-2) is the defending regular-season champion. The Dustdevils, however, are coming off a 78-69 loss to Newman University on Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan.

The Dustdevils are averaging 69.7 points per game with three players averaging double-figures in scoring – junior forward Jordan Clark (11.2), junior guard Matthew Culliver Jr. (11.2) and junior guard Johnel Gray (10.9). The Dustdevils are out-rebounding their opponents by almost 5 rebounds per game (34.4-29.5). Senior forward Jayvin Reynolds leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per game.

Texas A&M International is allowing 63.9 points per game and forcing 16.6 turnovers per game. Culliver Jr. leads the team with 24 steals, while Clark and Gray lead the team with 3 blocked shots apiece.

The Lady Lions (4-10, 0-2) are coming off a tough 80-60 loss to conference co-leader St. Mary’s University on Thursday night. UAFS, which is feeling the effects of the injury bug, is averaging 66.4 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior forward Katie BenAmor (13.3) and junior post Angi Ramey (11.4).

UAFS is being out-rebounded by its opponents by more than 1 rebound per game (47.1-45.9). Ramey leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per game. The Lady Lions are allowing 70.2 points per game and forcing 17.7 turnovers per game. Freshman guard Brittany Holbert leads the team with 26 steals, while Ramey and BenAmor lead the team with 38 and 22 blocked shots, respectively.

Texas A&M International (5-9, 2-2) is coming of a 70-63 conference road win against Newman University on Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan. The Dustdevils are averaging 63.3 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – junior guard Tina Dang (15.1) and junior guard Samantha Chacon (13.1).

The Dustdevils are out-rebounding their opponents by almost 1 rebound (39.5-39.3). Junior forward Malika Jackson leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game.

Texas A&M International is allowing 68.8 points per game and forcing 18.9 turnovers per game. Chacon leads the team with 33 steals, while senior center Rosebud Guthrie leads the team with 8 blocked shots.
