UAFS, Oklahoma Christian Clash In Nonconference Encounter

UAFS will take a brief break from Heartland Conference play today when it plays Oklahoma Christian University at the Payne Athletic Center in Oklahoma City.

Tip-off will be 2 p.m. for the women’s game and 4 p.m. for the men’s game. The games will be broadcast on KHGG-FM 103.1 and via the Internet at www.sportshog1031.com.

It will be the first-ever encounter between UAFS and Oklahoma Christian. Oklahoma Christian, a former NAIA program, is a provisional NCAA Division II member and a member of the Heartland Conference.

However, Oklahoma Christian is ineligible to compete for the regular-season conference title or qualify for postseason play because of its provisional status.

The Lions (6-5) snapped a two-game losing skid on Thursday night with an impressive 75-72 road win against Heartland Conference foe Dallas Baptist at The Burg Center in Dallas. UAFS improved to 2-0 in league play with the win and is one of only three remaining unbeaten teams in conference play.

UAFS is averaging 77 points per game with four players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior forward Djordje Stojanovic (12.8), junior guard Jake Toupal (12.2), junior guard Corey Copeland (12) and senior guard Dijon Farr (10.1).

The Lions are out-rebounding their opponents by more than 6 rebounds per game (41.5-35.3). Junior forward Bo Franklin leads the team with 5.4 rebounds per game.

UAFS is allowing 71 points per game and forcing 16 turnovers per game. Toupal leads the team with 15 steals and is one of four Lions with double-digit steals. Franklin leads the team with 10 blocks.

Oklahoma Christian (7-5) is coming off a 74-65 home loss to Newman University on Thursday night. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by the Eagles, who are 0-2 against Heartland Conference opponents.

The Eagles are averaging 75 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior center Will Reinke (18.7) and junior guard Kendre Talley (10.3). Oklahoma Christian is out-rebounding its opponents by more than 1 rebound per game (37.8-36.6). Reinke leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per game.

Oklahoma Christian is allowing 67 points per game and forcing 14 turnovers per game. Talley and sophomore guard Nick Tate lead the team with 15 steals apiece, and Reinke leads the team with 30 blocks.

The Lady Lions (3-9) are coming off a heart-breaking 51-49 nonconference loss to Henderson State on Wednesday afternoon at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark. It was the fifth loss in a row for the young Lady Lions, who have only two seniors on their roster.

UAFS is averaging 66 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior forward Katie BenAmor (14) and junior post Angi Ramey (10.5). The Lady Lions are being out-rebounded by their opponents by almost 2 rebounds per game (47.9-46.3). Ramey leads the team with 10 rebounds per game.

The Lady Lions are allowing 70 points per game and forcing 17 turnovers per game. Freshman guard Brittany Holbert leads the team with 21 steals and is one of six Lady Lions with double-digit steals. Ramey and BenAmor lead the team with 35 and 21 blocks, respectively.

Oklahoma Christian (8-6) has won four games in a row and is coming off a 73-71 home win against Heartland Conference foe Newman on Thursday night. The Eagles are 2-1 against conference opponents.

The Lady Eagles are averaging 78 points per game with two players averaging double-figures in scoring – senior center Katy O’Steen (16.5) and junior center Roz Hamilton (10.4). Oklahoma Christian is being out-rebounded by its opponents by almost 3 rebounds per game (45.9-43.4). O’Steen leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per game.

Oklahoma Christian is allowing 75 points per game and forcing 25 turnovers per game. Freshman guard Sydney Hill and junior guard Krista Stevens lead the team with 24 steals apiece, and O’Steen leads the team with 12 blocks.
