UALR Comeback Falls Short to UT Arlington at Home

LITTLE ROCK – UALR (12-15, 7-8 SBC) trimmed its deficit to three points twice in the final 30 seconds but UT Arlington (12-14, 7-7 SBC) was able to hold on for the 75-71 victory Saturday night at the Jack Stephens Center. Sophomore Josh Hagins led the Trojans with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes of work.

Leading by three at intermission, UTA opened the second half with an 11-0 run to go up 50-36 on a 3-pointer by Jamel Outler with 17:29 to play. The Mavericks’ lead grew as large as 15 following an old-fashioned 3-point play by Brandon Edwards at the 16:55 mark.

UALR fought back to trim the deficit to single digits, pulling within nine on a jumper by Hagins with 9:10 to go. That basket began an 8-0 run for the Trojans that ended with a steal and finish by junior Ben Dillard to make it 60-55 with 8:22 to play.

An offensive board and putback by junior Gus Leeper made it a three-point game with 6:31 to go, and two free throws by freshman Mareik Isom made it 63-60 with 3:00 to play.

Follwing Isom’s free throws, UTA answered with a 5-0 run, stretching the lead back out to eight with a little over a minute to play.

A 3-pointer by junior DeVonte Smith made it 70-65 with 58 seconds remaining. After Lonnie McClanahan split a pair at the line for the Mavs, another Smith 3-pointer with 27 seconds left made it 71-68. UTA scored three unanswered at the foul line to build a six-point lead with 17 seconds remaining, but Hagins hit a pull-up 3-pointer to again pull the Trojans within three with 12 seconds to play.

UTA went up four on another split at the line, but this time Hagins’ 3-point try came up short, allowing UTA to hold on for the 75-71 victory.

Smith finished the game with 12 points and four steals in 29 minutes as the only other Trojan in double figures. UALR shot 38.2 percent from the floor on the night (26 of 68) and 25.0 percent from 3-point range (7 of 28).

The Trojans held a 38-36 edge on the glass and pulled down 16 offensive boards on the night. UALR’s bench outscored UTA’s 40 to 13.

UT Arlington knocked down 10 of 24 3-point shots on the night and hit 23 of 32 free throws.

UALR is back in action Thursday, Feb. 27 at Troy. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
