UALR Cruises Past St. Gregory’s

LITTLE ROCK – UALR (7-3) shot 55 percent (33-of-60) from the floor and held St. Gregory’s (6-4) to 23.5 percent (12-of-51) shooting in a 91-30 victory Tuesday night at the Jack Stephens Center. UALR racked up a season-best 19 assists on the night while freshman John Gillon led four Trojans in double figures with 17, all in the first half.

The Trojans’ 91 points against the Cavaliers were a season high, as freshman Kemy Osse (16), freshman Stetson Billings (13) and sophomore Michael Javes (11) joined Gillon in double figures. UALR’s bench outscored SGU’s reserves 47-to-15, and the Trojans were able to score 35 points off 24 Cavalier turnovers.

Billings and Osse’s efforts were both career highs. Senior Ted Crass came off the bench to score a career-best four points on 2-of-5 shooting in 13 minutes of work.

The Trojans shot 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from three-point range and held St. Gregory’s to a 0-of-13 effort from long range. UALR knocked down 19-of-26 free throws on the night (73.1 percent) and the Cavaliers hit 6-of-13 attempts (46.2 percent).

The Trojans led in fast break points, 14-0.

UALR held a 44-to-31 advantage in rebounds, with Javes pulling down a team-high seven. Freshman James Whitegrabbed six rebounds and sophomore Will Neighbour pulled down five.

White and Javes blocked two shots each to lead UALR. Gillon and freshman Josh Hagins each had three steals to lead the Trojans, who finished the night with 13 as a team.

UALR built its lead quickly, scoring the first seven points of the game and building a 20-2 advantage over the first seven and a half minutes. St. Gregory’s broke a 13-0 UALR run with a free throw by Devonte Young at the 12:35 mark, but UALR answered with a 13-3 run to go up 33-6 with 7:16 left in the half. A trey by Gillon made it 42-10 with 3:45 remaining, and a layup by Osse with just under 30 seconds left in the half put the Trojans up 46-13 heading into halftime.

After intermission, UALR increased its lead to 39, 56-17, on back-to-back dunks by Neighbour. The Trojans went up 40 on a free throw by Javes at the 14:46 mark, then increased its lead to 51, 70-19, on a pair of free throws by Billings. UALR scored the next 10 points to go up 80-19, and went up by as many as 64 when sophomore Ben Dillard knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 87-23 with four and half minutes remaining.

UALR returns to action when it travels to play undefeated and No. 11-ranked Cincinnati on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.
