ATLANTA, Ga. – The UALR Trojans (9-9, 4-2 SBC) dug itself into a quick 11-0 hole and was never able to come close to digging itself out, dropping a 99-73 contest to Georgia State (12-6, 5-0 SBC) on Saturday at GSU Sports Arena. Sophomore James White scored a career-best 23 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and an 11-of-13 effort at the foul line.
UALR and Georgia State entered the matchup as the only two teams in the Sun Belt with four wins, but GSU built a quick lead and was never truly challenged in the contest. The Panthers scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back, taking a 59-29 lead into halftime and growing its margin as large as 35 a little over two minutes into the second half.
The UALR Trojans outscored the Panthers 44-40 over the final 20 minutes, but the 30-point halftime deficit proved far too much to overcome.
Senior Will Neighbour added 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting as the only other Trojan in double figures. Neighbour grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
The Panthers finished the game shooting 53.1 percent from the floor (34 of 64) and 44.1 percent from 3-point range (15 of 34). The Panther’s 34 made field goals and 15 made 3-pointers were both season highs for a UALR opponent.
UALR finished the night shooting 46.3 percent from the field (25 of 54) but hit just 2 of 11 3-point attempts (18.2 percent). UALR did connect on 21 of 23 foul shots (91.3 percent).
Georgia State forced the Trojans into a season-high 20 turnovers while turning those miscues into 33 points.
R.J. Hunter led five Panthers in double figures with 25 points on 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Manny Atkins added 22 on 8-of-14 shooting and Curtis Washington added 13 points and a game-high six rebounds.
The UALR Trojans return to action on Thursday, Jan. 23 against Texas State at the Jack Stephens Center.
