UAPB Golden Lions Close Book on Disappointing Football Season

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – A season that began with the UAPB Golden Lions favored to win the SWAC Western Division, came to a humbling end on Saturday. Quarterback Jerry Lovelocke rushed for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth, while running back Johnta’ Hebert rushed for 250 yards as Prairie View rolled to a 43-23 win over over the Golden Lions at Blacksheer Stadium.

The Panthers (6-6, 5-4 SWAC) snapped a three-game skid by piling up 597 total yards of offense and scoring 22 unanswered points in the first quarter. UAPB (2-9, 2-7) woke up in the second quarter and outscored PVAM the final three quarters 23-21, but the damage was done.

UAPB quarterback Benjamin Anderson passed for 226 yards and a touchdown for Golden Lions. He also rushed for 56 yards.

Lovelocke, who was 18-of-25 for 134 yards passing, rushed for 72 yards on the ground as well. Hebert piled up his yards on 35 carries.

Lovelock scored twice in the first quarter on runs of two and nine yards. Courtney Brown also scored on a 19-yard touchdown run. The Panther special teams even contributed with a safety off of a blocked punt.

The Golden Lions finally got on the board in the second quarter on a 30-yard fieldgoal by Tyler Strickland. But, PVAM answered with another touchdown, this time a 14-yard pass from Lovelocke to Walter Barreda. The score gave PVAM a 29-3 lead. Strickland hit a pair of fieldgoals from 25 and 34 yards out to make it 29-9 at halftime.

The Golden Lions matched the Panthers TD for TD in the second half, but could not make up any ground. Anderson had a touchdown pass andJeremiah Young scored on a 2-yard run. But, PVAM matched with a 1-yard TD run by Levon Castillo and a 7-yard scramble by Lovelocke.
