UAPB Lady Lions Valiant Effort Falls Short in OT

Montgomery, AL- This afternoon in SWAC action the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions traveled to the Acadome on the campus of Alabama State University to battle the Lady Hornets. 

Lakendra Marsh and Cassidy Wright got the ball rolling for the Lady Lions knocking down two big three pointers to give the Lady Lions a quick 6-4 lead. The Lady Lions were able to stretch thier lead the too as much as seven at the 16:07 mark, when Marsh Knocked down her second three of the contest. The lead would change hands twice before the halftime intermission; UAPB would take a five point lead into the locker room 34-29. 

The Lady Hornets would control the second half, as the Lady Lions would struggle with Alabama State’s pressure and had to fight to regain the lead with 10 minutes left to go in the half. The Lady Lions would hold their lead until ASU’s Britney Howard would tie the ball game on a free throw with 2:05 left in regulation.

Another lay-up by Kierra Paige would give the Lady Hornets a brief lead, but Chigozianyi Okwumabua would sink a lay-up with just eight seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period the Lady Hornets would prove to be the better ball club outscoring the Lady Lions 8-5, and come away with the victory 66-63. 

Despite fouling out, Marsh led all scorers with 17 points, and was perfect on all eight of her free throws. Okwumabua and Marion Thompson both chipped in 11 points for the Lady Lions tonight. 

Next on schedule for the Lady Lions is a Monday night contest against the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
