In youth baseball news, the 14 year old Monticello All-Star team sponsored by Commercial Bank won the State Championship title in Conway, Ark.   Six tournament teams participated in pool play Saturday to determine ranking for tournament play on Sunday.

The Monticello team shut out Sheridan All-Stars in four innings. Michael Hudson hit a triple in the 2nd with Cody Brown’s hit to left field bringing in the 1st scoring run.   Josh Adams struck out 6 batters by the 3rd inning.   The Sheridan pitcher was unable to strike out any of the Monticello players and they scored 12 runs in the fourth inning.   Scott Hewitt pitched the 4th inning with only 4 batters and the Monticello team finished the game 15-0.

The Monticello team played back-to- back against Vilonia All-Stars.  Neither team scored in the first inning. The game was tied when Michael Hudson, Cody Brown, and Josh Adams scored 3 runs off of a hit by Kevin Davidson to center field in the second inning.  Vilonia won 8-3 by the 3 inning.

Monticello played Sheridan in their first game on Sunday with Kevin Davidson pitching.  The Monticello team had 9 outfield hits winning the game 7-5.

Monticello played Lake Hamilton with Josh Adams striking out 8  batters in 4 innings.  Clark Jarrett hit a triple to lead off the 3rd inning.  Clint Pigott pitched  the 6th inning. Leading the hitting for Monticello was Ty Henderson with 2 singles, a double and a triple.  The game ended dramatically when Lake Hamilton’s third batter hit a fly ball to center fielder, Kevin Davidson, who caught the ball for the second out and threw the ball to 1st baseman,Ty Henderson, catching the runner in a double play. Monticello won 5-4.

Monticello’s final game was against Vilonia All-stars.  Michael Hudson made a home run tying the game in the first inning 3-3.   Monticello began taking the lead   when Lane Self hit a ball to short stop.  The 3rd inning ended 9-4.  Vilonia gained two runs in the 4th inning.  Monticello batted 17 times in the top of the 5th inning increasing the score to 20 – 6 with Mason Philly’s fly ball was hit to center field driving in the final run.  Dalton Adams the catcher for the Monticello team was brought in to pitch in the bottom of the 5th.  Dalton struck out two batters with Clint Pigott as catcher.  The game ended with a ground ball hit to short stop making the play to 1st base.  The final score for the championship was 20-7.
