The 14th ranked Lady Eagles softball team from Williams Baptist College finished the week 3-1, notching a win over the NAIA’s fourth ranked team and beating another team on the edge of the top 25.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, the Eagles traveled to Conway, Ark., for the CBC February Meltdown tournament. With fierce competition in Texas Wesleyan University and the Stars from Oklahoma City University, WBC had their work cut out for them. Wesleyan is receiving votes for the NAIA National Top 25 poll, and Oklahoma City came in ranked fourth in the latest poll.
Williams left the tournament with two resume’ building victories. They beat TWU 4-3 and OCU 2-1.
Shelby Anderson pitched game one and went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits to get the win. Karisa Hendrix earned the save going three innings, allowing an unearned run, while striking out six.
The second game was played against the Stars from OCU. OCU ended WBC’s hopes of a national championship in 2012 by knocking them out of the NAIA National Tournament. However, on Saturday the Eagles would come out victorious. Anderson would provide the fireworks from the plate, while Hendrix apprehended the Stars’ bats.
Anderson hit two solo homeruns, accounting for all of the Eagles’ scoring. Hendrix pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and one unearned run. She struck out 10 OCU batters.
“I could see the desire in both players to get wins this weekend. Shelby hit two big homeruns and Karisa’s eyes just seemed focused on a mission,” said Head Coach Eric Newell.
The week did not start off well for the Lady Eagles, however, as they played a doubleheader at home on Monday, Feb. 18, against Blue Mountain College. After dropping game one 3-2 in extra innings, WBC bounced back and run-ruled the Toppers 8-0 in game two.
Anderson pitched a complete game three-hit shutout in game two. She also went 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and three runs batted in. She is now hitting .556 on the young season.
Williams’ record now stands at 5-1. They will travel to Carroll County, Tenn., on Tuesday, Feb. 26, for a doubleheader against Bethel University. Their next home game will come against another highly ranked opponent. Central Baptist College, ranked sixth, will come to Walnut Ridge on Saturday, March 9, for a matchup with the Lady Eagles.
