First segment of youth duck hunt this weekend
LITTLE ROCK – The first segment of Arkansas’s 2015-2016 duck season closed Sunday, Nov. 29, with the second segment looming Dec. 10-23. But hunters less than 16 years old will have a special season Saturday during the first segment of this season’s two-part youth waterfowl season.
Unlike in past years, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission enacted a two-part youth waterfowl hunt for the 2015-2016 season. The second youth waterfowl hunting day will be Feb. 6, 2016.
Conditions for Saturday’s youth hunt bode well, with cooler temperatures in place after heavy last weekend.
Waterfowl habitat is abundant across The Natural State, with most waterfowl hunting impoundments flooded to capacity on AGFC wildlife management areas.
Special regulations apply to Saturday’s youth hunt: Youth 15 and under may harvest ducks, geese, coots and mergansers. Youth who have completed a hunter education course must be accompanied by a mentor 18 years or older, and youth who have not completed a hunter education class must be accompanied by a mentor 21 or older.
Mentors may not hunt but may call waterfowl. Shooting hours and bag limits are the same as the regular duck season, although youth hunters may hunt on AGFC WMAs from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset. Sweet 16 WMA permits aren’t required for youth hunters.
