Both the UAFS men’s and women’s tennis teams faced a tough encounter on Saturday afternoon against Cameron University, but despite several competitive matches, UAFS was swept by Cameron at Fort Smith Athletic Club.
The Lions lost their match 8-1, while the Lady Lions lost a heartbreaker 5-4.
The Lions played hard and fought for every single point in both doubles and singles matches against No. 19-ranked Cameron. The highlight for UAFS was the No. 1 doubles match, where freshmen Chris Ramirez and Jorge Salazar beat Nicolai Ferrigno and Dennis Merdan 8-2.
The Lady Lions also played great matches against very tough No. 11-ranked Cameron.
Junior Whitney Hobson and freshman Taylor Price beat Elle Sholles and Antonia Moberg at No. 3 doubles, securing Lady Lions’ only doubles match win.
The Lady Lion’s continued to play great throughout the singles matches, winning three of six matches.
Junior Amy Belanger beat Sholles at No. 3 singles in a three-set thriller 6-2, 6-7, 6-1. Freshman Abby Thompson played a tough match at No. 5 singles, beating Laura Winter 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. Once again, Hobson won her second straight No. 6 singles match, beating Moberg in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Lions will host NCAA Division I University of Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fort Smith Athletic Club
