Golden Lions and Jaguars: Advantage Golden Lions 2-1

Baton Rouge, La- the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions took their show on the road, in SWAC western division match-up against the Jaguars of Southern University. UAPB split the first day double header with SU 9-1 for a win in the first game and 7-5 in the second as the Jaguars were able to get the victory.

On Saturday, in game one, it was all Jim Pleoger. Ploeger was credited with the complete game victory, going nine innings, striking out eight; while giving up one run on five hits. Isias Alcantar was the man the plate for the Golden Lions going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and 4our RBI’s. Alcantar and Dwayne Hysmith recorded homeruns in game one. Hysmith’s solo shot came in the sixth inning for the game’s first run. Alcantar blasted a grand slam in the seventh inning to make the scoreboard reflect, 9-0. The Golden Lions busted the game open in the seventh inning scoring eight runs. 

In the second game, SU scored four runs in the first inning and was holding a 5-2 lead going into the seventh inning; after the Golden Lions scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Both clubs would add to their respective run totals in the eighth inning. The Golden Lions, in the top half of the inning, tied the ballgame at five. But Southern, scoring two more runs in their half of the eighth, pulled out the 7-5 victory.

On Sunday, the Golden Lions were all business as they posted an 8-1 final to wrap up the weekend series. UAPB struck first as Warren Stehn came around to score on an error by the Southern catcher. The Golden Lions scored four more runs in the fourth inning. Along with Stehn, Isais Alcantar, Kirby Campbell and Mike Wieland all crossed the plate to expand the Golden Lions lead. 

The Jags tallied their only run of the ballgame in the fifth inning. While the Golden Lions, added two runs in the seventh and one more run in the ninth for the game’s final score. The Golden Lions Kyle Schwartz was credited with the win, going 6 1/3 innings striking out eight.
