Hammond, La- Over the weekend, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions baseball team battled the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana University in a three day weekend series.
On Friday, the Golden Lions were scheduled for a 6:00 PM first pitch. Jaron Gold was the starting pitcher in Friday’s contest, going 4 1/3 innings, facing 23 batters while striking out three. UAPB scattered four hits throughout nine innings, capped off by Isias Alacantar’s solo homerun in the top of the second inning for the Golden Lions only run of the night. UAPB held a 1-0 lead through three and a half innings as SLU defeated the Golden Lions 14-1.
On day two of the three game set, Golden Lions pitcher Mikey Ramirez went 8 1/3 innings, striking out three and only allowing seven hits. UAPB also tallied seven hits taking a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning, at which point SLU rallied behind three runs on three hits for a 4-3 final.
On Sunday, the final day of the series, the Golden Lions sent Jim Ploeger to the hill for the start of game three. UAPB registered eight hits, facing five different SLU pitchers; while the Lions faced six UAPB hurlers for 16 hits. The Golden Lions only run of day came when Mike Ludwig crossed the plate on a Mike Wieland sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth. SLU would take game three 17-1.
The Golden Lions are back home tomorrow for a nine inning contest against the Bears of Central Arkansas. The game was originally scheduled for 3 PM at the Torri Hunter Baseball Complex but has been moved to Taylor Field for a 6 PM start time.
