Pine Bluff, Ark- On a beautiful day for baseball, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions closed out its conference opening weekend with a 5-4 victory over the Jaguars of Southern University.

The Golden Lions struck first when right fielder Dylan Calhoun crossed home plate for the game’s first score. After a one, two, three inning in the second, UAPB would push their lead to 3-0 on an Isias Alcantar two run home run, in the third.

In the fourth inning, Southern answered back with two runs of their own making it a 3-2 ballgame. Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Golden Lions would strike again. This time off the bat of Mike Wieland, as he took the offering from Sothern’s pitcher and drove it over the right field fence for the Golden Lions second home run of the day, making the score board read 5-2.

The Jags added two more runs in the top of the sixth and ninth innings for today’s final. UAPB’s Jim Ploeger got the decision, while Redmond Floyd was credited with the save.

Up next for the Golden Lions, is a Tuesday night contest in Ft. Worth, Texas, as the Golden Lions take on the horned frogs of Texas Christian University.
