Helena-West Helena Central Cougars Dominate Marianna Trojans

 

The Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (1-1) dominated the Marianna Trojans (0-1) from start to finish in a 47 to 8 victory at Cad Polk Stadium.

Helena-West Helena got on the board on the game’s first possession after taking possession at the Trojan 42.  The Cougars needed only five plays to score.  Fullback Keith Hays capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:19 to go in the first quarter.  The extra point was no good and Helena-West Helena led 6-0.

After the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars defense forced a punt after three plays, the Cougars went 41 yards on eight plays.  Facing a 4th and 6 at the Marianna 40, Helena-West Helena’s Curly Brewer hit Anthony Lewis for the touchdown.  The try for two failed and the Cougars led the Trojans led 12-0 with 1:50 to go in the first quarter.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, the Cougars took over at the Trojan 10-yard line.  Brewer hit Sandy Wright for the 8-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the drive.  Brewer called his own number for the two-point conversion, and Helena-West Helena led 20-0 with 57.1 seconds to go in the first quarter.

The second quarter only got worse for the Trojans.  On the fourth play of the quarter, Devonte Herred scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with 10:49 to go in the half.  The PAT failed and the Cougars led 26-0.

After a bad snap on a punt by Marianna, Helena-West Helena needed only five plays to go 34 yards.  Brewer hit Anthony Lewis for a 20-yard scoring pass.  Brewer hit Sandy Wright for the two-point conversion to make the score 34-0.

The Cougars added one more socre in the half when Keith Hays scored on a 47 yard run to cap off a 3-play, 77 yard drive with 1:25 to go in the half. Sagar Patel hit the extra extra point to make it 41-0 at the intermission

The Cougars, with the mercy rule in effect, got the only points of the third quarter on a 23-yard run by Keon Demps with 5:25 to go to cap off a 10-play, 62-yard drive.  The PAT failed and Helena-West Helena led 47-0.

The Trojans avoided the shutout in the final stanza when Jemarcus Arnold broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run to end a 9-play, 70-yard drive.  Arnold hit Marcus Davis for the 2-point conversion to make the final 47-8.

Cougar Coach Russell Smith was pleased with the team’s performance.  He said, “It was good to bounce back after last week.  We have to continue to work hard and improve.  We have potential, but we have to get better each week.”
