Hogs Beat Sooners 81-78 In An Epic Finish

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –  Junior Marshawn Powell scored a career high 33 points and sophomore BJ Young knocked down the game-winner to lead the University of Arkansas basketball team to an 81-78 win over Oklahoma on Tuesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

Powell had a banner night to go along with his 33 points; he grabbed a game-high six rebounds with five assists.  The junior from Newport News, Va., went 11-of-17 from the floor, hit a career best four three-point baskets and hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  His 33 points are the most by a Razorback since young tallied 31 against Florida last season.

“Powell had a career night,” head coach Mike Anderson said. “His presence was very important and evident tonight. He is a versatile guy and he was in a zone.”

Arkansas (4-3) was able to respond from a late Oklahoma rally when Young hit a layup with 15 seconds to play.  Powell sank two free throws moments later after grabbing a rebound on a missed Oklahoma shot.

“Two good teams really competed tonight,” Anderson said. “Our guys played more relaxed and in rhythm. It was good to see them get better and be rewarded with a win.”

Young also had a standout day, distributing the ball amongst his teammates, as the sophomore tallied a career-high eight assists. Young and junior Mardracus Wade assisted the Razorbacks as they both finished the game in double-digits with 10 points each.
