Jim Harris Live: Arkansas at Texas Tech

It’s game day: Arkansas at Texas Tech – just like the old days of the Southwest Conference. Today’s game time is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. Jim Harris will be posting his thoughts throughout the game here, so check this page often. (Scroll down about halfway and you’ll see the posts from Jim.)

Arkansas defensive line coach Rory Segrest on Taiwan Johnson’s play: “The thing about Taiwan is he’s an attention-to-detail guy. He tries to do things the way you ask him to do it. He’s explosive. He’s got some good quickness. He gives us some options inside. From a movement standpoint we can do some things with him there.” Segrest on Texas Tech’s offense: “They do some different things. They’ve got some really good skill guys and they try to get the ball in their hands. They will run some quick plays and they will also try to stretch the field. We’ve just got to make sure we’re consistent, attacking the line of scrimmage and stopping the run first.” Arkansas defensive backs coach Clay Jennings on the safety rotation: “We had three main guys last week: Liddell, Turner and Gaines. I believe we’ll have De’Andre Coley back this week as well so we’re excited to have him back. It’s fun to almost be totally healthy again.” Jennings on Josh Liddell’s play: “We played around 70 snaps, I think Josh played about 35 of them. He made a couple of freshman mistakes. The one good thing that he has done this week is he’s come out and corrected those and had a pretty good week of practice.” Arkansas safety Alan Turner on the defense the last two days of practice: “I feel like we did pretty well. We know we had some things where we made mistakes but that’s where film comes in and the next day we come in and try to fix those mistakes.” The Razorbacks are set to battle Texas Tech Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas in a game that will be televised nationally on ABC. Kickoff against the Red Raiders is slated for 2:30 p.m. arkansas at texas tech
4:51 p.m. — Rohan Gaines just destroyed the Texas Tech receiver with a perfect hit in the “strike zone” (nothing illegal or at the head), causing an incompletion and a stoppage in play to tend to the headache for Reginald Davis, who scored Tech’s first touchdown. His head hit the turf. That gives me a moment to explain the Brandon Allen touchdown. It was a pass call, but there was nothing open, so Allen, moving closer to the left sideline, saw the opening and darted for the end zone.
4:46 p.m. 35-21 — Arkansas controls the clock for its first possession out of halftime about as well as Bielema could have drawn it up, running off half the clock of the third quarter and moving out to a two-touchdown lead on a smart keeper by ss, Brandon Allen for 6 yards. Last year, Allen might have just thrown that ball away or made a forced throw into coverage, something other than running. Of course, after he hurt his shoulder against Southern Miss, running was probably out of the question for him. Arkansas converted a fourth-and-1 from the Texas Tech 40-yard line on a Jonathan Williams run through right tackle. Arkansas ran 12 plays to cover the 75 yards, and the Hogs also converted one of the two third downs. Most of it was on the ground, but Arkansas did start the drive with a quick toss to the left to Demetrius Smith, when everybody in the house was probably expecting run.
4:10 p.m. 28-21 Arkansas, halftime — Hogs have 151 yards rushing at the half, the same as they had at intermission two weeks ago at Auburn. And, as we remember, Arkansas and Auburn went into halftime tied at 21. Arkansas and Tech both have two turnovers. The Hogs’ Jared Collins touched a punt on the first series of the game and Tech recovered at the UA31, leading to the first score. Arkansas also had the ridiculous gaffe as it was apparently going in for a go-ahead score in the second quarter with the weird trick play that was fumbled. Arkansas recovered a Tech fumble inside the Red Raiders 15 early and Martrelle Spaight intercepted Davis Webb and returned it to the Tech 12 to set up the go-ahead score. Jonathan Williams has 66 yards on 10 carries and 3 touchdowns. In the passing department, Brandon Allen is 5- for-10 for 49 yards. Texas Tech’s Webb is 18 for 30 for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and Webb has also run for another score.
4:01 p.m. 28-21 — Jonathan Williams, when he tastes the end zone, can’t be denied today, barreling and rolling 12 yards for the score on the first play after Spaight’s pick. There is 1:30 left in the half, enough time for Webb, but maybe Arkansas hopes he gets greedy again. The Hogs get the ball to start the second half, incidentally.
4:00 p.m. — Martrelle Spaight saves things for the Hogs with an interception over the middle and a return to the Raiders 12. Davis Webb made a bad decision throwing into heavy coverage.
