FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas running back Alex Collins has been named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week for his 212-yard and two-touchdown performance at Texas Tech, the Maxwell Football Club announced today. This is the first time a Razorback has been recognized as the Maxwell Award Player of the Week. Collins rushed for 212 yards, the ninth-highest single-game total in Arkansas football history, in the Razorbacks’ 49-28 win at Texas Tech. The sophomore also rushed for two touchdowns, including an 84-yard fourth quarter score that gave Arkansas a 21-point lead and put the game out of reach. The 212 rushing yards were the most by a Razorback since running back Darren McFadden matched the SEC single-game rushing record with 321 yards against South Carolina on Nov. 3, 2007. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native leads the SEC with 411 rushing yards this season and ranks second in the conference behind teammate Jonathan Williams with five touchdowns. The Maxwell Award has been given annually to America’s outstanding collegiate football player since 1937, and the award is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell. Collins was named to the Maxwell Award watch list in July. The Maxwell Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Arkansas will host Northern Illinois on Sept. 20, at 6 p.m., in Donald W. Reynolds Stadium. The match-up will be broadcasted on ESPNU. 8:45 p.m. — It’s 38-14 by the way. And NIU fails on an onsides kick.
8:42 p.m. — Kudos to the Northern Illinois braintrust who drew up a middle screen in the red zone and called it at just the right time when Arkansas sent the house, resulting in a 15-yard touchdown for the Huskies. Joel Bouagnon, who earlier had a 44-yard carry on a screen, took the pass from Drew Hare and it was pretty much an easy trip to the goal with 10:05 still left. NIU covered 75 yards in 10 plays, converting 3 of 3 third downs. Arkansas was even helped by two drops by NIU receivers and it still didn’t stop the Huskies. NIU knew which safety to pick on, Alan Turner, but the receivers didn’t reward Hare. Hare did a nice job on the zone read as well. That was probably the worst series for the defensive front since the first half.
8:37 p.m. 38-7 Arkansas — In case you’re counting at home, NIU has just 37 yards rushing after coming in averaging 325 yards in three games (against nothing competition, mind you).
8:33 p.m. 38-7 — John Henson gets some redemption, knocking through a 21-yard field goal from a tough angle on the right hashmark to finish a short drive following the NIU fake punt failure. The Huskies have 12:59 left to make a game of it. They’ve had trouble on every possession but one dealing with Arkansas’ defensive front, and the Hogs have made the correct adjustment to the long, across the field pass to the sideline against man-to-man coverage. Arkansas was in position to punch in a touchdown with three downs inside the 5, but even an overloaded right side couldn’t open enough room for Alex Collins on second down and Brandon Allen had to scramble up the middle to get back to the 4 on third down.
8:24 p.m. I think everybody in the house could see that fake punt coming by NIU deep in their own end. The punter kept it and Hogs stuff it at the Huskies 34 and take over there.
