FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas running back Alex Collins has been named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week for his 212-yard and two-touchdown performance at Texas Tech, the Maxwell Football Club announced today. This is the first time a Razorback has been recognized as the Maxwell Award Player of the Week. Collins rushed for 212 yards, the ninth-highest single-game total in Arkansas football history, in the Razorbacks’ 49-28 win at Texas Tech. The sophomore also rushed for two touchdowns, including an 84-yard fourth quarter score that gave Arkansas a 21-point lead and put the game out of reach. The 212 rushing yards were the most by a Razorback since running back Darren McFadden matched the SEC single-game rushing record with 321 yards against South Carolina on Nov. 3, 2007. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native leads the SEC with 411 rushing yards this season and ranks second in the conference behind teammate Jonathan Williams with five touchdowns. The Maxwell Award has been given annually to America’s outstanding collegiate football player since 1937, and the award is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell. Collins was named to the Maxwell Award watch list in July. The Maxwell Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Arkansas will host Northern Illinois on Sept. 20, at 6 p.m., in Donald W. Reynolds Stadium. The match-up will be broadcasted on ESPNU. A limited supply of tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 1-800-982-HOGS (4647) or going online to ARKANSASRAZORBACKS.COM. 6:01 p.m — Not quite quickoff time yet. ECU and North Carolina are running a little long on ESPN, and they have this game set to kickoff at 6:07 now. Pretty good crowd here tonight, with the exception of the north sections of the upper deck, two and a small fraction sections that are mostly empty. The third larger section closer to the 20 yard line is sparse. I can’t see the west upper deck, but I think the tickets sell better on that side, they aren’t in the sun. It’s probably a tough son for those folks in the east side right now, except for the lower 10 rows. It’s been a beautiful day here. We arrived early and walked around a lot of the tailgating on the north end, visiting with fans making up the Shreveport Razorbacks tailgate, then checking out Lot 72 across from the west stands. Currently it’s 80 degrees and a breeze out of the south. Barely a cloud left in the sky after a partly sunny afternoon. Should be a great night for football and doing a post-game show afterward. No rain this time!
5:43 p.m. — Arkansas’s and Northern Illinois’s warmups are completed, the fans are finished their warmups in the tailgating areas, and we’re just 22 minutes from kickoff, according to the scoreboard. I’ll blog the game from start to finish (or near there, depending on the score and situation for doing post-game locker room interviews) and you can catch analyst by me and former Hogs Clint Stoerner, Mike Shepherd, Rick David and possibly Broderick Green at 10:30 p.m. on KTHV, Channel 11, on the “HogZone.” If you want to comment, email me at jim.harris@sportinglifearkansas.com or tweet @jimharris360 or comment right here on this blog in the comments section. I’ll check all those regularly, and i’ll be tweeting as well from @jimharris360. My dumfounded question of the day for the UA: Who chose the pregame music that is blaring out of the speakers at ear-splitting level. Actually, it’s not bad at all except for one item: Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” playing just 25 minutes before kickoff, with the teams warming up. Seriously, “In the Air Tonight”? Even the elevator security guy couldn’t believe it. Dump Phil Collins now! If that’s playing before the Alabama game in three weeks, heads should roll.
