Ken Carver Hired as New JBU Volleyball Coach

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. — Ken Carver has been tabbed as the seventh head coach in John Brown University volleyball program history, Director of Athletics Robyn Daugherty announced this week.

Carver replaces Stacie Johnson, who guided JBU to a 73-68 record during her four years at the helm.

“Ken is a great fit for JBU and the volleyball program,” said Daugherty. “His 13 years of collegiate head coaching experience has given him a deep understanding of game strategies and program development. His desire for the holistic development of the student-athletes fits perfectly with the mission of JBU and the athletic programs; I see a great future for the volleyball program under his leadership.”

Most recently, Carver wrapped up his eighth season as head coach at NCAA III Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. He took over the program in 2006 and, since then has become the winningest and longest-serving coach in the program’s history. While at HPU, Carver amassed an overall record of 93-138 (.403) after inheriting a program that posted a 5-24 record in 2005. He has coached 13 players that have garnered American Southwest Conference honors, including the ASC West Division’s Freshman of the Year in 2008. The 2013 season set another program record as the Yellow Jackets began the campaign winners in nine of its first 11 contests.

“I’d like to thank President [Charles] Pollard, Robyn Daugherty and the entire search committee for extending the offer to me,” said Carver. “I’m very excited to begin working at an institution where excellence is stressed across the board. I hope to continue to build upon the success of the program and take it to greater levels of success in the conference and nationally.”

In 2013, Ken Carver was also tasked with holding the responsibility of Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, as he monitored HPU’s compliance with all American Southwest Conference and NCAA policies and procedures.

Carver’s teams at HPU excelled in the classroom as he oversaw a trio of teams that earned the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association’s Team Academic Award. His squads have also been active outside the classroom as Carver’s 2007, 2008 and 2011 teams were named the ASC’s SAAC Team Sportsmanship Award recipients while one player landed ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year in 2008.

Prior to his eight-year stint at Howard Payne, Carver spent three seasons as head coach at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan. His coaching path also includes stops at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill. and at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., where he began his career as an assistant coach.

During his career, Carver has coached 17 NCCAA All-Region players, six NCCAA All-Americans, 28 All-Conference players, two NAIA All-Region players and one NAIA All-American. He also was recognized as the NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2004.

Carver graduated cum laude in 1994 from Malone University in Canton, Ohio, and has pursued post-graduate studies in wellness management at Ball State University. He holds a Level One certification from USA Volleyball and has earned USA Volleyball’s IMPACT certification.

The Golden Eagles finished the 2013 season with a 15-19 record and a 9-7 record in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
