The UAFS women’s and men’s tennis teams had a busy weekend filled with tough matches against both nonconference and Heartland Conference opponents.
UAFS finished the weekend 1-1 in the women’s matches with an 8-1 nonconference win against Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant on Friday and a 7-2 conference loss to St. Edward’s University in a neutral site match in Dallas.
Against Southeastern Oklahoma State, the Lady Lions took care of business by winning all of the three doubles matches. Lady Lions remained focused through the whole match, winning five of the six singles.
The Lady Lions (5-6) couldn’t keep that momentum going , though, against St. Edward’s, falling behind 3-0 after the doubles matches. UAFS won only the Nos. 3 and 6 singles matches.
The Lions (2-7) had three tough matches during the two-day road trip, losing to No. 47 Southeastern Oklahoma State 5-4 on Friday and losing to No. 15 St. Edward’s University 6-3 and NCAA Division I Southern Methodist University 7-0 on Saturday in Dallas.
Against Southeastern Oklahoma, they won two of the three double matches. However, the Lions were unable to keep their momentum going in singles play.
The highlight of the match was freshman Chris Ramirez’s three-set thriller against Filip Pavlovic. Ramirez found himself down a set, but he came back, winning the No. 2 singles match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
UAFS fell behind early to St. Edward’s, trailing 2-1 after the doubles matches, and never recovered. The Lions’ only wins in singles play came at Nos. 5 and 6. The Lions finished their weekend road trip with a tough encounter against SMU, which shut out the Lions.
The Lions and Lady Lions will return to action at 1 p.m. on Thursday when they play Oklahoma Baptist University at 1 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
