Pine Bluff, Ark- On Tuesday, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions hosted the Lioness of Langston University in double header softball action at the Torri Hunter Softball Complex. Langston took the first game, 9-0, while UAPB wrapped the second half, 9-1.

In the first game, Langston jumped out to an early 7-0 lead by the middle of the third. The Lioness was able to capitalize on some costly UAPB errors that proved to be the difference in the final outcome. The Lady Lions struggled from the plate in game one; as LU pitcher Ashley Fabian got the decision recording a one hit shut-out.

The second game was a complete opposite of the first game, as The Lady Lions scored nine runs on 14 hits. LU managed to get on the board first, 1-0; but there was just something about the third inning all day, as UAPB was able to blow the game open in their half of the third inning. The Lady Lions scored five runs, on three hits and three LU errors.

Later on in the fifth inning, freshman catcher Kelsey Ridgeway blasted a two run homerun to make it a 7-1 contest. Lacie Sutterfield would come around to score on an Emille Gwyn single, for run number eight. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Sutterfield singled to bring home Tiressa Jacobs for the 9-1 final.

Sutterfield, also the winning pitcher in game two, went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s; while Ridgeway was 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

“The girls were not into the first game and I could see that with how they played”, said head coach Tiffany Ansley. “They decided to show up and show out the second game and I hope that we keep the momentum going into the weekend.”

Next up for the Lady Lions is SWAC western division weekend series as they host the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M University. First Pitch is set for 3:00 PM, Friday afternoon.
