Fordyce, Ark- Due to inclement weather early in the day in Pine Bluff, the weekend series between the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions and the Southern University Jaguars took a detour south of Pine Bluff to Fordyce.

Maybe it was the change of scenery or the adrenaline rush of competition, but whatever it was the Lady Lions took full advantage of it tonight.

“We didn’t let the rain delay or sit change effect us. We went in strong and we stayed solid throughout both games”, said head coach Tiffany Ansley about her team’s performance.

In game one, it was all Kelsey Ridgeway as she went 2-for-3 with two homeruns, four RBI’s and two runs scored. After Southern would score their only run of the game in the top half of the third inning, in the bottom half of the third the Lady Lions broke open the game on the hot bat of Ridgeway. After Delya Jackson drew a walk and a Tiressa Jacobs single, Ridgeway stepped to the plate and blasted a three run, opposite field shot that put UAPB in front 3-1.

Later on in the sixth inning, in her very next at bat, Ridgeway belted her second homer of the day this one being a solo shot over the left field wall. Both teams managed five hits apiece, but the heavy hitting of Ridgeway prove to be the difference in the ballgame, as UAPB took game one 4-1.

In the second half of the double header, the Lady Lions didn’t lose any momentum as the pitching duo of Lacie Sutterfield and Heather Leigh combined to throw a one hit shutout, 6-0, along with the Lady Lions registering ten hits, UAPB seemed to be on cruise control as the night prevailed.

Sutterfield started off strong only giving up one hit and striking out two of the 16 batters she faced. while only walking two. Leigh got three innings of relief work facing ten batters giving up nothing as she closed out the Lady Jags for the save.

Offensively, the Lady Lions dominated. In the third inning, Jasmine Hardwrick would lead off with a solo home run for the first score of the game. Leigh, after singling to reach base later came home on a Tiressa Jacobs single to make the game 2-0.

Then in the fourth, after a Sutterfield walk, Nikole Frazier homered to make it a 4-0 game. Later in the sixth after a Frazier walk and two singles by Jordan Foyer and Hardwrick, a sacrifice by Delya Jackson brought home Frazier and Foyer for runs five and six.

The Lady Lions are back in action tomorrow in Fordyce at the Fordyce Civic Center to wrap-up the weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 120:00 PM.
