Garland, Tex- On day two of 2013 SWAC Tournament, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions was matched up against the #2 seeded Lady Jaguars of Southern University.

The Lady Lions got off to a fever pitch, as they were able to establish their game plan early in this afternoon’s contest. Christina Lasane and Lakendra Marsh knocked down back-to-back three pointers, for an early 7-6 lead. The Lady Lions would regain the lead, at the 14:14 mark, when Chigozianyi Okwumabua put in a lay-up to make the score 13-11. Southern tied the ballgame at 18, on a jumper by Brittany Washington, at which point the Lady Lions proceeded to go on an 11-3 run; capped off by an Asia Rhines-Malone steal and fast break lay-up before the buzzer to close out the half with a ten point lead, 31-21.

After the intermission, the Lady Lions picked up right where they left off pushing their lead to 12, 28-40, when Lasane would make a fifteen foot jumper, with 15:26 left in regulation. Down the stretch, crucial lay-ups and free throws would help the Lady Lions keep firm hold on a lead that the Lady Jags whittled down to as much as four. But Rhines-Malone, who recorded her second double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, split two free throws to give the game its 63-58 final.

“I’m just so happy to be in this position, to be able to play another day. I’m real happy with the way our girls executed today”, said head coach Nate Kilbert. “We never would have won that ballgame if we didn’t execute they way we did”, added Kilbert.

The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Jags 32-12 on points in the paint and out rebounded Southern 51-31.

“We followed the game plan to a tee. The motto for this year’s tournament is why not us”, said Lasane in the post game interview.

The Lady Lions had four players in double figures today. Rhines-Malone led all scorers with her double-double, while Okwumabua turned in 12 points and 6 rebounds. Lasane and Jenise Gentry both scored 10 points. Lasane was also perfect from the field, connecting on all five of her attempts today.

Jasmine Jefferson was the high point player for the Lady Jags with 16 points, on 7-of-11 shooting.

UAPB will have Thursday off as they await the winner of tomorrow’s match-up between the Mississippi Valley State University and Alabama A&M University. The Lady Lions don’t play again until Friday. Tipoff time for Friday’s game is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
