Live with Jim Harris: LSU at Arkansas

It’s game day: LSU at Arkansas. The forecast is for cold weather, but there’s no better time than tonight on ESPN 2 starting at 7:00 for the Hogs to grab their first SEC win of the Bret Bielema Era. Jim Harris will be posting his thoughts throughout the game here, so check this page often. (Scroll down about halfway and you’ll see the posts from Jim.) FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –Versatile dual-threat quarterback Matt Jones will return to Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium to serve as the A Club honorary captain for the LSU game on Saturday, Nov.15. A four-year letterwinner from 2001-04, Jones passed for 5,857 yards in his career, good for fourth-most in program history, while rushing for 2,535 yards to rank eighth all-time. He also threw for 53 touchdown passes, placing him third all-time in program history, while running for 24 touchdowns, which is eighth all-time. He was a 2004 All-SEC second-team selection by the coaches. Jones led a memorable comeback against LSU in 2002. With the Razorbacks trailing by six and less than a minute to go, Jones led Arkansas on a 3-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 31-yard touchdown pass to WR DeCori Birmingham with nine seconds remaining. Arkansas took down the Tigers, 21-20. The Fort Smith, Ark. native served as team captain in 2004 and during his four years helped the Razorbacks compile a team record of 30-20 (.600), while appearing in three bowl games. Following his career at Arkansas, Jones was drafted in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a wide receiver. His statistics during his four-year NFL career include 2,153 yards and 15 touchdowns. The A Club honorary captain is recognized before each home game for their outstanding accomplishments on the field during their Razorback career. Before kickoff, they will be recognized and will accompany the captains to midfield for the coin toss. The Razorbacks will host the No. 20 LSU Tigers. LSU at Arkansas
9:20 p.m. 10-0 Arkansas, end of three — Well, my live blog readers. Once more Arkansas goes into a fourth-quarter of an SEC game this year with a chance to end the futility. The Hogs have the ball at the LSU 40 with a third-and-7 to start the fourth quarter. The Hogs just took a deep shot to the end zone on first down from the 43, and Hunter Henry drew double coverage. That’s a good sign. Must keep LSU honest and not throwing everything at the running lanes.
9:13 p.m. — A 29-yard pass and run for Hunter Henry from Brandon Allen got the Hogs into LSU territory again, but the LSU defense stepped up with a third-down sack of Brandon Allen at the 42. Sam Irwin-Hill punts the Tigers back to their 5. They’ve seen that before.
9:09 p.m. — And of course now Dan Skipper returns to making killer penalties, hitting LSU’s Kendell Beckwith in the back after a short carry by Alex Collins. Minus 15 yards for Arkansas for the personal foul.
9:05 p.m 10-0 — Arkansas survives the stupidity of giving LSU a second chance, and Trey Flowers make a huge third-down sack of Jennings, bringing on the usually dependable Delahoussaye from 47 yards. It’s wide right AND short. Arkansas needs to get its act together and just go and win this game. Enough jacking around after 17 straight SEC losses. Can I put it any plainer than that?
8:59 p.m. — Arkansas has come out in the second half apparently already feeling the pressure that it might actually win an SEC game. And if the Hogs kept playing like they did in the first half, they just might. But no, a new Arkansas is on the field, fumbling (luckily for Arkansas it rolled out of bounds when LSU tried to scoop and score after a Jonathan Williams drop), dropping passing (Drew Morgan, wide open for a first down, another drop) and a DELAY OF GAME, of all things, trying to get off the punt from the 19. So, from the 14, Sam Irwin Hill is lucky to get it out past midfield with the roll. Arkansas then has LSU seemingly off the field after a third-down incompletion, but Rohan Gaines reverts to his awful play and crashed into the head of the LSU receiver, targeting, and is tossed. Just a really stupid play. Stupid plays are the bane of the Hogs and why they never win an SEC game.
