Matt Calhoun of the Harding Bisons Named GAC Hitter of the Week

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Harding’s Matt Calhoun and Northwestern Oklahoma State’s Jason Martyn earned the Great American Conference’s Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for the sixth week of play, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

GAC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Matt Calhoun, Harding, 1B, Jr., Searcy, Ark.

In a three-game sweep of East Central, Calhoun raised his batting average 111 points to a team-leading .367 after going 8-for-10 against the Tigers. He opened the series by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. He reached base all four plate appearances in game two with three more singles and a walk. He drove in two in the 4-3 win. In the finale, he hit his first home run of the season as part of a 3-for-4 day.

GAC BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Jason Martyn, Northwestern Oklahoma State, RHP, Sr., Laverne, Calif.

Martyn pitched a complete game shutout to improve to 3-2 in Northwestern Oklahoma State’s 2-0 victory against Southern Nazarene on Friday. Martyn allowed just three hits – none for extra bases – over seven innings. He struck out six batters and walked only one. He remains on pace to break the Rangers’ single-season strikeout record with 38 whiffs in just 29.1 innings of work.

– Ben Agredano, SS, Jr., Arkansas-Monticello (Posted a .563 on-base percentage and scored four runs during the week)

– David Harris, SS, Sr., Southern Arkansas (Totaled four doubles and a home run out of his seven hits during the week)

– Zac Johnson, OF, Jr., Arkansas Tech (Hit .462 with three RBI and three runs scored vs Ouachita Baptist and Southeastern)

– Trevor Long, SS, Sr., Northwestern Oklahoma State (Drove in four runs and hit .583 in series win vs Southern Nazarene)

– Evan Ramsey, DH/2B, So., Southeastern Oklahoma State (Hit .583 in leading team to series win at Arkansas Tech)

– Justin Sutherland, IF, Sr., East Central (Hit .500 with a .643 on-base percentage over four games)

 

NOTABLE PITCHING NOMINEES

– Eddie Cervantes, RHP, Sr., Southeastern Oklahoma State (Threw 5.2 hitless innings and picked up win vs Arkansas Tech)

– Philip Menou, LHP, Sr., Southern Arkansas (Threw his fourth complete game of the season; allowed only three hits to HSU)

– Eddie Smith, RHP, Sr., Arkansas-Monticello (Recorded his first two saves of the season; allowed just one hit over 3.2 IP) 

– Ryan Taylor, RHP, Jr., Arkansas Tech (Allowed only a run on three hits in 8.0 IP to earn win vs Southeastern Oklahoma State)
