Nelvis of the Red Wolves Track Team Named Sun Belt Track Athlete of the Week

JONESBORO, Ark. (1/30/13) – Arkansas State University’s Sharika Nelvis was named the Sun Belt Conference’s (SBC) Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week in an announcement made this Wednesday (Jan. 30) by the conference office.

Nelvis, a junior hurdler, received the weekly league recognition for the second time this season after claiming the honor three weeks ago (Jan. 9). She holds the distinction of being this season’s initial winner of the conference’s track athlete of the week award.

A 2012 U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Second-Team All-America selection, Nelvis captured first place in both the 55-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash at the ASU Invitational this past Friday (Jan. 25) in Jonesboro, Ark. She clocked a 7.79 time in the hurdles event while running a time of 24.53 in the sprint event on the ASU Convocation surface. Nelvis’ time in the 200-meter dash represented the conference’s top effort in that event to date this season.

For her career, Nelvis has currently earned SBC weekly laurels six times. She was a four-time recipient last season, twice in the indoor season (Feb. 8 and 15) and two times in the outdoor campaign (April 19 and 25).

With her selection, the conference has now bestowed a weekly award on an ASU track student-athlete five times this season.

Nelvis and the Red Wolves will be in action this weekend (Feb. 1-2) at the Southern Illinois (SIU) Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
