Postoperative Care After an ACL or Meniscus Repair

These procedures may typically last up to two hours. After surgery, you will be bandaged and transported to the recovery room where you will spend a few hours under close observation. After spending an amount of time in the recovery room, where your vitals are monitored, you will be allowed to go home that day if your doctor allows it.

After a meniscus repair or ACL reconstruction, the use of a brace or splint may be implemented for your protection. You may feel more comfortable using assistive walking devices such as crutches or a cane. During your rehabilitation it is important to reduce the amount of stress placed on the joint. Be careful not to overextend yourself.

Recovery time typically takes up to nine months of physical therapy and strengthening exercises before you are able to return to normal activities.

It is very important to play an active role in your rehabilitation and perform the exercises your therapist gives you on a daily basis. Rehabilitation programs vary from physician to physician, so it is best to consult with your doctor for the best postoperative plan for your recovery.
