Red Wolves Begin Competition at Old Waverly Collegiate

WEST POINT, Miss. (4/8/13) — The Arkansas State men’s golf team is tied for 14th place at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship after completing the 54-hole tournament’s first two rounds Monday with a combined 624.

The Red Wolves shot a 315 in the first round before coming back to cut six strokes off that total in the afternoon round, leaving them seven strokes behind 13th-place Middle Tennessee. Mississippi State leads the 14-team field with a 575, while UAB is second with a 576 and South Alabama third with a 582.

Four of A-State’s five competing players posted their best score of the day in the second round, including Wessel Zwiegers with a 75 that was the lowest total of the day by an ASU golfer. Zwiegers ended the first two rounds a team-best tied for 51st place, also shooting a 79 for the first 18 holes to give him a combined 154 score.

Following Zwiegers for the Red Wolves, Chance Holden is tied for 60th place (79-77–156), Matt Howton tied for 64th (80-78–158), Seth Garner tied for 67th (80-79–159) and Christian Helmbold tied for 71st (77-83–160).

The tournament’s third and final round will be played Tuesday.
