The two-day competition gets underway this Sunday (Feb. 24) with the start of the field events at 10 a.m. (CT). The action will continue throughout the day before concluding with the men’s and women’s distance medley around 8:15 p.m. (CT).

The final day of the conference meet is set for this Monday (Feb. 25) at 9 a.m. (CT), beginning with the 55-meter hurdles in the pentathlon. The women’s weight throw and triple jump events will also be held at the same early morning time. The final event in the 2013 championships will be the 4×400-meter relay at 4:40 p.m. (CT).

“Both the men’s and women’s teams have performed well so far this indoor season and we’re looking forward to seeing how we fare in the conference championships,” said ASU head coach Jim Patchell. “I believe we have set ourselves up to have a chance to do really well. The goal of our program is to be in a position to have a shot at the title year in and out and I think we have done that. That being said, we must be mentally and physically ready to perform well.

“This week our practices are going to be a little easier so we can be rested and at our best when it counts this weekend,” added Patchell.

Arkansas State is hosting the SBC Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second time in the last three years. The Red Wolves served as the host institution for the 2011 SBC Indoor Championships which were held Feb. 27-28 in Jonesboro. The ASU women’s team placed second with 95.5 points while the men’s squad turned in a fourth-place 91 points performance.

A season ago (Feb. 24-25) at the 2012 SBC Indoor Championships, the Red Wolves garnered third place on the men’s side with 90.5 points and the women’s team captured fourth-place honors by generating an 83.5 points output. The 2012 conference indoor meet was conducted at Middle Tennessee University’s Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn. All-American Sharika Nelvis led A-State with three first-place finishes – 55-meter run (6.91), 55-meter hurdles (7.82), and 200-meter run (23.80).

“Having the meet at home is a plus for us,” Patchell said. “We are used to training in the Convocation Center and usually always perform well on our home track.”

Tickets for the 2013 SBC Indoor Track Championships are $4 for adults and $2 for youth ages 12 and under per a one day pass. Students with SBC institution valid ID’s will be admitted into the event free of charge.
