Valentine’s Day Massacre. Don’t let the name fool you. It’s not some horror movie. It’s not some death and gore historical event. I’m simply talking about an annual mixed martial arts fight held in Little Rock.
Last Saturday, Feb. 16, one of the biggest, baddest and most exciting mixed martial arts event in the state took place. There were amateur as well as professional fighters from across the state – and surrounding states – competing for that coveted victory.
So why am I telling you about this fight? Why am I encouraging you come and watch people dance around a cage, attempting to knock each other out? Believe it or not, I’m a huge MMA fan. If you had asked me to sit and watch a fight about five years ago, I would have laughed and said I had better things to do. But that changed after I attended my first MMA class under the instruction of Nathan Kirby.
This guy is INSANE. I’m not talking crazy; OK, maybe a little. I’m talking about insane energy, passion and dedication for teaching a sport he loves so much. That insanity rubbed off on me in a big way. Standing five-foot-nothing, weighing in around 120 (yes, ladies, I just revealed my weight), I soon discovered this was an amazing way to lose weight, build muscle and above all boost confidence.
Although the training hasn’t helped me get any taller over the past three years, I have accomplished everything I wanted out of it. I’ve lost weight. I am stronger than I ever was competing in any sport growing up. And I’ve got a load of confidence that spills over to sarcasm from time to time.
Bottom line… give it a shot. I went to the Valentine’s Day Massacre last Saturday. Below is a report to show you just how exciting it can be and maybe it’ll convince you to check it out!
