Top-ranked Lady Chaps Bump No. 23 Lyon College, 90-68

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Coming off it’s biggest win of the year thus far, the Lyon College women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome the hot-shooting Lubbock Christian University squad that hit 60.4% (32-of-53) from the field and 47.1% (8-of-17) from behind the three-point arc as the No. 1-ranked Lady Chaparrals topped the 23rd-ranked Scots, 90-68, Saturday in James C. Becknell Gymnasium.

Lyon College (9-2), which had it’s five-game winning streak snapped with the loss, finished the Lyon College Classic with a 1-1 record, after defeating 28th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University, 64-52, on Friday. Lubbock Christian remained unbeaten on the year, improving to 14-0.

In the other game on Saturday, Williams Baptist College (7-5) held off OBU, 69-68, as the Lady Eagles posted a 1-1 mark at the tourney, while the Lady Bison (7-4) were winless at 0-2.

Despite holding a five-point lead (14-9) at the 13:36 mark of the first half, the Scots couldn’t sustain the advantage as the Lady Chaps hit 66.7% (18-of-27) from the field in the first half. LCU outrebounded Lyon, 34-14, during the game, but Lyon forced 18 Lady Chaparral turnovers, while committing only 15.

Lyon College senior post Suzanne Fincham led the Scots in scoring, hitting 8-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe for a career-high 19 points. She also added five rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior All-American Phagen Altom broke out of her scoring slump to score 17 points, connecting on 5-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 behind the three-point arc.

Senior Debbie Onukwube came off the Lyon bench to score 11 points and pick up three steals. Junior Alex Davidson and sophomore Whitney Keith each chipped in six points, while senior Christine Smith scored five and junior Gabby Jenkins scored four points.

The Scots hit 43.5% (10-of-23) of their field goals in the first half as LCU held a 44-30 lead at the break. The Scots converted 13-of-32 (40.6%) in the final 20 minutes to finish the game with a 41.8 percentile (23-of-55) from the field.

Lyon did shoot the ball well from the charity stripe, converting 17-of-19 (89.5%). Lubbock Christian made 78.3% (18-of-23).

Lubbock Christian’s Courtney Wilson led all scorers with 21 points. She hit 10-of-12 from the field and added six boards. Emily Atkins dropped in 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Kelsey Hoppel came off the bench for 16 points and add five rebounds.

Nicole Hampton was also in double-figure scoring for the Lady Chaps, scoring 11 points. Haley Burton dropped in 10.

After trailing Lyon College by five with less than 13 minutes remaining before the break, Lubbock Christian fought back to tie the game, 14-14, at the 11:50 mark. After the teams were tied 18-18 with 10:12 left in the half, the Lady Chaparrals finally grabbed the lead for good, 20-19, with 9:50 left in the half.

Leading by 14 at intermission, Lubbock Christian slowly widened the gap in the second half, creating a 20-point lead, 63-43, at the 10:23 mark. The Scots would never get closer than 15 points after that point.

Lyon College will now look toward its first-ever America Midwest Conference matchup on Thursday night, taking on Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis at 5:30 p.m. The Lyon men will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Both Lyon teams will be at home next Saturday, taking on Williams Baptist at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men).

WILLIAMS BAPTIST 69, OKLAHOMA BAPTIST 68

After having several opportunities to tie the game in the game’s final minute, the Oklahoma Baptist University Lady Bison fell just short when Charity Fowler could only convert 1-of-3 free throws with less than a second remaining as Williams Baptist College escaped with a 69-68 win Saturday.

Four Williams Baptist players scored in double figures, led by Kimberly Wise’s 15 points. Tieara Burks chipped in 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while Meagan Goza added 13 points and six boards and Chasity Hamilton pitched in 10.

Fowler led OBU offensively, scoring 17 points. Zbeyda Aremi added 15 points, Janell Beacham scored 12 and Jalissa Council dropped in 11.

The Lady Eagles hit 46% (23-of-50) of their field goals in the game, while the Lady Bison converted only 38.7% (24-of-62).
