Fresh off a pair of nonconference matches, the UAFS men’s and women’s tennis teams jumped back into Heartland Conference play this past weekend with a pair of neutral site matches against No. 48 St. Mary’s University and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at the T Bar M Racquet Club in Dallas.

The Lions and Lady Lions opened the two-match road trip against UTBP early on Saturday morning. The Lady Lions started of great, winning all three doubles matches and sweeping all six single matches, beating UTBP 9-0.

The Lions continued with their winning streak by winning Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, securing their lead before going into singles matches. The Lions remained focused throughout the entire match, defeating UTPB 5-1.

UAFS’ second matches were against a very tough conference opponent in St. Mary’s. The Lady Lions won only their No. 3 doubles match, falling behind to St. Mary’s before going to singles. The Lady Lions lost their top three singles matches, losing the match to St. Mary’s 5-1.

The Lions were unable to continue with their winning streak, falling behind early and winning only one of three doubles matches. Their only doubles match was at No. 2 doubles match, where freshman Matt Tabler teamed up with freshman Clay Sandefur to win 8-3. Despite being down, the Lions continued to fight, winning one more singles match at No. 4 before eventually losing the match 5-2.

The Lions are off until the end of spring break, but Lady Lions will return to action on Tuesday, when they will play Northeastern Oklahoma State University at the Fort Smith Athletic Club.
