CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College men’s basketball team held off a late run by Millsaps College for a 69-66 victory at Grove Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The win was the first Southern Athletic Association win of the season for the Warriors (6-11, 1-5).
After leading 36-30 at halftime, Hendrix expanded their lead to 57-42 with 5:19 to play. The Majors (3-14, 1-5) began chipping away at the lead on back-to-back three-point plays from Ryan Berger and Tully Gilligan, respectively, followed by another pair of free throws by Gilligan, making the game 57-50 with 3:59 left.
A lay-up by Warrior forward Colton Primm with 1:33 to go move the lead to 65-55. , A three-pointer and a basket by Major guard Murray Kastner cut the deficit to 65-60 with 34 seconds remaining. Hendrix freshman guard Drew Nikolovski made four three throws, while Gilligan hit a free throw and a bucket over the next 24 seconds, making the game 69-63 in the Warriors’ favor. Kastner hit a three-pointer with .5 seconds remaining to make Hendrix’ winning edge three points.
For the game, the Warriors shot a season-best 51 percent (25-of-49) from the field. They also went 4-of-17 from outside and 15-of-23 at the charity stripe. The Majors shot 38 percent (24-of-63) overall, 5-of-17 from three-point range and 13-of-23 at the free throw line. Millsaps also had a 38-35 rebounding advantage, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds which led to 25 second chance points.
Primm led Hendrix with 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go with 15 rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots. Sophomore forward Luke Vance had 15 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Jaren Riley added eight points and tied his career-high with six assists. Freshman guard Jordan Taulton scored a season-best eight points, as did Nikolovski. Sophomore guard Nathan McCubbin dished out four assists, had two blocks and a steal.
Kastner led the Majors with 21 points, going 5-of-8 from three-point range. Gilligan had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and Berger finished with 11 points and seven boards.
Hendrix will travel to Centre College in Danville, Ky. for an SAA game on Friday.
